Føpé, not liking the slim pickings of these woods, will return stealthily (20) to the location of the camp. If he perceives (4) that the Visanti are still there, he returns to the woods. If they are not, he searches for his pack.

Ok. You can keep those numbers, provided you successfully get there. Let me try again to explain your predicament:
You are in the fog. Just as you did last night and again this morning, you can either choose to (1) go somewhere, (2) gather food, or (3) both. If you choose to go somewhere, roll Survival with advantage to go somewhere. If you choose to gather food, roll Survival with advantage to gather food. If you choose to do both, then roll for Survival twice, without advantage (or disadvantage), once for each.
So it looks like you want to go somewhere, and do not want to search for food. Cool, that's option (1). So roll Survival with advantage, and see if you get there. If you do then you can proceed as indicated.
Stanimir would have discouraged you. There is a good chance your friend will return to look for this, he would have said. I am afraid he will need all the help he can get, and it will be a long time before we see him again, if we do at all.
Fope, you navigate through the fog with little trouble. Perhaps it is a little lighter, now that the sun is higher in the sky, though it's still quite gloomy.
You make your way back to the Visanti's campsite, and discover it is completely vacant. There is not a discarded chicken bone or scrap of cloth indicating that they were here. Just some scuff marks where their tents stood, and the blackened, cooled remains of their fire. You look for your pack.

Perception: 14 Is there such a thing as taking a 20 by spending lots of time at it? Sometimes looking for my keys takes longer, sometimes not as long, but I usually find them eventually.
Barnaby would surely have picked up the bag and rummaged through it to see if there were any goodies in there, but after the admonishment from Stanimir, guilt would get the better of him and he would leave it behind.
Did napping through the night in a travelling cart count as a long rest?
Sure is nice to be riding rather than walking for a change. I'll tell you, though, this freelancing work is a bit different than Dad and the other adventuring folks back hom,e described. Back then if you wanted a job you just had to go to a tavern or inn, have some ales with the locals, maybe a trencher of stew and before you knew it someone would burst through the door looking for a posse to help with goblin horse thieves or a kobold den that was stealing the chickens and before you knew it you were fighting a dragon or some such. Now we're just traipsing about the countryside from one rich dame to another
Ah, yes, "met in an inn," that surely is a classic Kif. Pudot, who slew the Gorgon of the Isle of Leviticus met his travelling party at an inn. So many have done just the same. It's how I assumed my inevitable adventure would begin as well. That is why I've spent every evening since leaving Waterdeep at one inn or another. It does make for some hefty bar bills and some rough mornings though.
On the other hand, you must admit, a secretive meeting with gypsies where it is revealed that you are destined to save an empire and its royalty from a mysterious curse? That is about as fantastic a start as one could hope for.
Where is it that you hale from Kif, and what drove you to Daggerfell?
"Well, Kif, back in my much younger days, I created my own adventure within the streets of Waterdeep. What an amazing city my home is! Full of fun and games for miles rich with merchants, gamblers, and politicians! I was a leader of a famous clan that was rich with wealth and power and we ran many an adventure to serve the most unfortunate of the city, in our own way. But I gave that all up when the Goddess, Shar, called me to this work. So now here I am with you, enjoying your company as we, hahaha what did you say, Kif? Travel from Rich Dame to another?"
Barnaby noticeably stiffens and hearing the name Shar. Oh um...well...that is a, uuuuh, an interesting goddess to worship Puddin. How was it that she uuuh...called you to your work...to work for one who is so...so...sooooo complicated in her moralistic choices?
I will have to keep an eye on this one. To be travelling alongside a priestess of an evil deity. This adventuring is already so much more complicated than I imagined. I wish Chimmi were here. She always knew how to handle any situation.
Paige, here is some background on your chosen deity. I do not imagine that you will read it all, but it might be nice to have a few factoids to work with...
Yes! Good question. Everyone in the cart has received the benefit of a long rest.
You should be able to find, somewhere a little above dead center of your character sheet, on the first page, a little button that says "LR," next to one that says "SR." Pushing the "LR" button will refresh your character sheet with the appropriate adjustments. I think.
Fope looks around the campsite, hoping to find his bag. As he nears the blackened earth where the fire burned, he realizes a hair too late that he is not alone.
Fope hears a snuffling from across twenty foot width of ash and cinders, and stares into the eyes of a curious creature. It has two eyes and two legs, it is covered with hair, and it has large eyes. Fope would not recognize this creature, but to Dov it would look like a small chimpanzee, with curious horizontal black and green stripes across its entire body. It is an unnatural creature, with those bizarre markings, and it looks quite annoyed already. And it is holding Fope's pack, having (so far) been unable to open it.
Fope, roll for initiative. We are not using a battle map; it's just going to be right here.

I hale from the dwarven city of Kheldarim near the Spine of the World. Nothing 'drove' me to Daggerford or Waterdeep, indeed it is impossible to wander the Sword Coast without spending time in either. While I spent time in various inns I have found the secret is less ale and more conversation.
There is no such thing as "taking 20" in 5E. It's a nice feature in Pathfinder, and I suppose it was in D&D 3.5 as well, but it's not necessary in 5E. If you could find your backpack in 20 minutes (or whatever) with no consequence, I would simply not ask you to roll. I would tell you that you searched for whatever amount of time, and you found it.
Unfortunately, the roll had (as I hope all of the rolls I ask for do) a real purpose: A higher perception roll would have permitted you to see this creature before you saw it. But in the fog, you ended up seeing each other at the same time. So you see that the idea of "taking 20" would not quite have worked, to get the effect I wanted.

I realized that once I read about the creature.
You say this creature is unnatural. Does that mean animal handling will have no effect? He is currently holding his crook, and would like to use it for that purpose.
Føpé's sword is attached to his pack. Would he be able to draw it from the creature with an unarmed attack roll?

Do I know anything of Shar

Yes, you're familiar with Shar. Her worshippers value secrecy, and revenge. Her followers are not necessarily evil, and in your travelers you've encountered some who you were happy to spend some time with. But a cleric of hers, even if not evil herself, is in touch with some real darkness. How she might process that is up to her.
I imagine that anyone who knows of Shar's reputation and now knows of Puddin's association with her would be, for instance, reluctant to try to pick her pocket. She might plot for a long time to get revenge for such a slight, if she so chose. I imagine that would be a thought going through your head, not that you were likely to try to pick her pocket anyway.
Puddin, none of this is intended to put pressure on you to behave one way or another, though you should be mindful of some of what Shar has going on. She is your deity, and you should try to honor that, but that doesn't mean that you should be anything other than a ray of sunshine, if you want, in your actual conversations with your actual friends. I'm just saying that there is this side of you that is into that stuff, and how that manifests is up to you.

Puddin' those sound like great adventures indeed, helping the less fourtunate is always worthy.
There's a roll with advantage feature on the dice.
Well then why did you have to cheat? :p
Dov is correct! There is a pulldown menu that lets you choose to roll with advantage or disadvantage. Cool.

While you're here, what's the plan for the afternoon in the fog?

I'm imagining we took the backpack with use when the campsite was packed up

What would you have done?
Kif would have been ok with leaving the pack, and his opinion of Stanimir would have improved a notch.
Whew!
Done and done.
