Jambiya, growls as Erric races from safety back into the fray. Her recent unconsciousness all too fresh in her mind, she peeks around the doorframe and lets another crackly blast go at the chicken.
Action: Eldritch Blast - 5 to hit, for 7 force damage
OOC > Jeebus these rolls! Time to shake out the demons! Dice roller check: 10.52
Jambiya attempts to attack from the relative safety of the hallway, but she overextends her reach and her aim is very bad. She hits the statue instead.
The cockatrice turns to attack Maldorn. (bite attack: 21; damage: 4 piercing damage) (DM roll for Maldorn: 6) Thought the bite is minor, the human almost immediately feels his body begin to stiffen alarmingly. (Maldorn is restrained. Mal, you'll need to roll another DC11 CON save at the end of your next turn.)
Anafrey draws the shortsword she retrieved from the dead kenku and slashes at the cockatrice with the blade in her offhand before thrusting forward with her own sword.

It takes a few seconds for Maldorn to realize his muscles are slowing down, so he just keeps stabbing for now (OOC: advantage from flanking offsetting disadvantage from restrained).
Action: Attack
-> Dagger vs. Cockatrice: Attack: 23 Damage: 4 piercing.
Bonus Action: Two-weapon Fighting Attack
-> Dagger vs. Cockatrice: Attack: 18 Damage: 3 piercing.
As he tries to speak, Maldorn realizes just how dire his situation really is.
(OOC: Assumed I was waiting for news of whether the cockatrice fell after Maldorn's furious attack, but if it's still standing...)
Erric, seeing Maldorn unleash his fury and inspirationally seemingly fight off the petrification, tries to stab his rapier into the fray at the turkey: Attack: 11 Damage: 7
OOC: I need to disappear more often. Much better rolls!
Anafrey thrusts twice, piercing the feathered hide of the cockatrice twice. The creature raises its head toward the ceiling and makes a screeching warble. Marldorn, fighting the effects of the creature's poisonous bodily secretions, uses his own two blades. He stabs once into the creature's back and then swipes, lopping off the head with his other arm. As the feathered body falls onto its side, he grunts, closes his eyes, and feels his muscles begin to loosen up. A cold sweat breaks out suddenly all of his aged body, but his limbs seem looser, and he bends and flexes his arms and fingers in relief. As he looks at his hands, he realizes his skin had taken on a gray cast, which is also disappearing.
Anafrey nods at Maldorn, then motions with her head at the Kenku while she cleans her blades and sheathes them before going over to examine the corpse of the cockatrice.

"Let us never do that again." Maldorn says after spending some extra seconds on the floor recuperating from his close brush with petrification. Catching Anafrey's nod, the old rangers stands up, sheaves his hunting knives and takes a closer look at the bird-man statue: "If the stories I heard are true, this stone effect is not necessarily permanent. We may still have a bird prisoner for your questions, Master Feric."
Erric's rapier actually stabbed the cockatrice through the heart after Maldorn beheaded it. "That's what the experts would call an act of redundant and literal martial overkill," Erric says, just beginning to react to the adrenaline, chest heaving. "I get the feeling that could have been a lot worse. Maldorn, are you all right? It's just your hair that's supposed to be grey, not your skin. Don't try any stony glares or you might regret it. Har? Har har?"
He leaves Anafrey to the examination of the horror chicken, though he half wonders if she plans on field dressing it and eating it.
Erric moves over to the statue and starts looking for dust, specks of ash blown from the burned house, and feels it to see if it's still warm. He wants to know if this was a recent event. (Investigation 6 if needed.)
He responds to Maldorn, once again ignoring the butchered name, with a nod. "Have you ever tied up a statue before?" He looks to see how the kenku is standing and if ropes could be used to restrain it. He also looks to see if it dropped anything on the ground or had obviously been doing anything in the room before being petrified, or if it's armed at all in statue form.
Jambiya comes back in to the room, "Maldorn, are you okay?!" She checks him over as he brushes off the gray cast. "That was one for the stories! I agree, this bird man will come to and we should question it. Do you think this thing had young? It seemed quite protective. You all were so brave!"

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Anafrey looks over the creature. It seems to have all the anticipated body parts. Clearly, it is magical, seeing as how it has the ability to turn other creatures to stone. She isn't sure how that is accomplished, however. Its wings are sufficient in size, and she theorizes it might be able to fly faster than it can run ... when it isn't cooped up in an old mansion, that is. (Is there something in particular you're wanting to learn or do?)
Maldorn and Erric, the fact that the kenku has been turned to stone is clearly blowing your minds. Neither of you discover anything. Well, Erric does realize something very strange. It looks like the magic of the cockatrice not only turns the creature it attacks to stone, but everything the creature is holding and carrying as well. Touching it, Erric feels the stone is fairly room temperature. The pose of the creature looks as though it was running away from the cockatrice. Tying up a creature in this pose would take a lot of rope wound around each limb separately.
Looking away from the confounded creature, Maldorn notices another diary page. He picks it up, realizing it's another two-sided page.
Finally, no, Erric, you don't hear anything except occasional nature sounds from outside the house.
Is the corner where the cockatrice had been hiding/staying at all noteworthy? As in, is there a nest there? Evidence of it staying there for some reason? Something in the corner which might be an explanation of why it was there in the first place? Or does it just seem like it wandered around the house like we are?
(Also, Erric has some string but no rope. He looks around for something in the room that might bind the kenku statue. Since he still doesn't know why the kenku outside attacked them without communication or provocation, he doesn't trust that this one will be happy to see them.)
"So does anyone have any theories? This murder chicken just wander in by happenstance? Maybe a family pet? Or maybe the mirror's some portal to a mystical realm of cockatrices, and the revelation of its existence can drive someone into liminal specterhood.
"Whatever it might be, how are we doing, friends? Do we have it in us to find out what other horror poultry call this burned-out house a home? Do we want to take an intermission and come back in the morning when everyone's a bit fresher?"
Anafrey looks up from the cockatrice corpse at Erric thoughtfully, "Aye I have a theory. I'm having withdrawal nightmares and should've brought more drink." She leaves the parts where they lay for now and gently lifts the bird-man statue. "If we think they'll be useful, we'll bring them along shall we?" She studies it for a moment, "For some reason I get the feeling that they're a... Harvey?" She shakes her head to clear it, "Come on then, I believe there's one room on this floor that we have yet to explore."

Clearly drowned out by Jambiya’s nervous babbling. :)
