Aseid was no less grateful, expressing the gratitude with a short bow. Now that the hatch door was fully revealed, he searched for the way to open it. If one was found, he tried to do it (Athletics? 25 and if Maldorn helps, once more: 16 )
The hatch is not locked, but it does take quite a pull to open it due to rust and debris lodged in the gaps. With mighty wrench, Aseid and Maldorn pull on the imbedded ring. There is an awful groaning noise and high-pitched whine as the hinges complain. Snap, who is resting in an empty window hole nearby makes a whistling noise mimicking the sound. The men change from pulling to pushing, and get the hatch door past the 90-degree angle point. The hinges give a final groan, and the door stops, seeming to defy gravity.
Looking into the hatch, the party sees a ladder descending into darkness. The beam of light admitted by the open hatch falls 10 to 15 feet onto another rubble-strewn floor below.
OOC: Hopefully the ongoing Pass without trace spell shielded some of that noise to the outside world. It does say "veil of shadows and silence", after all.
Maldorn invites everyone to move into the tunnel after Jambiya and before himself. He'll bring the rear, as is tradition.
Aseid will definitely stop her. If it's dark down below he would light the torch and move down ahead of everyone. "There were gargoyles just last night in this place. We do not know what else to expect. Let whatever is coming first hit me." Before he disappeared into the hole, he added only one thing. "Does not look like the door was disturbed. Do you think the gnome even knew about its existence?" It was something to think about.
As Aseid is turning away from Jambiya after explaining his reasoning, Snap flies by them all, diving down into the hatch. The dark-haired young man quickly descends the ladder and lights a torch. He finds himself in an almost round tunnel that is only four and a half feet from floor to ceiling. He can't be absolutely positive, but it looks like this used to be part of Neverwinter's sewer system. Looking both directions, however, he can see that the ceiling has caved in, blocking the main tunnel. There is another tunnel that intersects their tunnel a little ways off. Nearby, however, is Snap. The sound of crunching and what Aseid is pretty sure is a thin black tail hanging from the pseudodragon's mouth tells him Snap is enjoying a snack.
So, you're in a tunnel that's about 40 feet long. Both ends are blocked by rubble. Another tunnel heads off to the right about 15 feet from the bottom of the ladder. The tunnel is five feet wide at its widest and not quite five feet from floor to ceiling. And the only light is the little bit of light come from the open hatch and Aseid's torch.
This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
((Does the tunnel go into the direction of the metal rod in the ground?))
Aseid walked to the entrance of the tunnel and let the light of the torch illuminate as much as was possible. He checked the floor for the tracks and the ceiling for the signs of a potential cave-in. "This entrance fits the gnomes better but this is the only one."If no cave-in was imminent, he steps inside and walks ahead.
"Snap!" Jambiya cries as he swoops through the hole. She hurries down after Aseid to find Snap happily munching on a confidential informant. "Snap... I could've asked that rat about what's down here," she chides, but gently. "Now none of them are going to come talk to us." Fondly, she gives the little dragon scritches, then looks about with her darkvision. "Oh, I'll fit!" she says, moving towards the short tunnel.
As much as Aseid did not like it, he had to admit, that in that tunnel he would be less of a shield and more of a plug. He stepped aside to let Jambiya pass through, just hoping to be in time if his help will be needed.

Jambiya will try to be sneaky as she moves down the tunnel, whispering a short entreaty to her mother, and clasping the wooden spoon hanging around her neck.
Add 4 if the above roll fails, for Pact of the Talisman (and let me know you did so I can mark it off)... I know with a Stealth roll it is sort of dependent on if there is anyone listening, but... magic! Right?

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
As the last one in, Maldorn will spend a minute or so hammering a piton on the ground outside, at such an angle that it would prevent the hatch from closing completely flush. He is hoping this will prevent, or at least delay, any effort to fully close and lock the hatch after the party has moved into the tunnel. In fact, he'll also close the hatch once he is done, as to minimize the chances it is found by others after they descend. Of course, because of the piton, the hatch wouldn't close completely.
The main tunnel (with a cave-in on both ends) runs roughly parallel to the main road through Keeper's Square. Comparing your position to the map, you're "north" of where the pole went into the ground, so the off-shoot tunnel is heading in the right general direction.
Maldorn, since you all had to kind of dig down to fully uncover the hatch lid, you feel OK about the small amount of gap your piton leaves.
Jambiya leads the party through the tunnel heading "south". Watching her step, the little goblin girl notices gaps between many of the stones that make up the floor, but the stones don't seem to be unsteady under her weight. Aseid, the tunnel doesn't look at all "safe", but as far as you can tell, it all seems to be holding together ... for the moment anyway. Everything from about a foot off the ground and down is coated in layers of foul acrid slime. Aseid, you also notice that, despite Jambiya being directly in front of you, the shadows being cast by your torch seem to move around her in odd patterns. You find yourself being continually distracted away from looking at her. Erric and Maldorn, for all you know, Jambiya has moved ahead and is no longer in the tunnel you're traversing behind Aseid. Aseid and Maldorn, you are also having to hunch down to keep from scraping your head and shoulders on the tunnel ceiling, which is also making the heat from the torch right at head level, which is uncomfortable, Aseid.
As you move through the 20-foot long side tunnel, you begin to hear occasional dripping. Also, the air begins to feel more damp, and it begins to smell even worse. The tunnel you are in joins a larger tunnel again going left and right. This 10-foot wide by 10-foot tall tunnel's floor is covered in water, and you're not sure how deep it is. The water emits an unholy stench, but thankfully there seems to be little reason to loiter here. Looking to the right, you can see that the water exits the tunnel through some kind of low grate (though there is no current at the moment). Looking to the left, the tunnel has had a cave in and is blocked. There is another smaller tunnel continuing the same direction ("south") you just came from on the other side of the larger tunnel.
Jambiya works her way across the large tunnel into the continuing tunnel south. The gross slime gets to her, and she moves up on to the left hand wall of the new tunnel. Once inside the entrance, she will stop to look back for the others.

Maldorn hovers over, adjusting his cloak while doing so: "Is it locked?"
He nods gratefully at Jambiya for the clean up.

Erric calls out in a hushed whisper to Jambiya. "Do you want to be invisible?" he says in his best "I don't know about this, Scoob" tone of voice.
Maldorn has a suggestions for Aseid and Erric: "Perhaps it is best if Erric holds the torch, so the fire is not so close to our faces."
Aseid did not argue with the sensible idea and gave the torch to Erric.
