Humblodt has a meal and settles down to rest, after which he prepares some of his restorative berries. He will head back to the shrine shortly before midnight.
If Ro or anyone else follows, they will see Humblodt conversing with the elf, handing over some berries and bending to drop another into the cauldron, which is nearly brimming with a dark red liquid.
All of a sudden, thick fog surrounds the moonlit shrine like an eerie shroud. As the fog thins, the elf can be seen standing before the shrine, arms reaching upwards. Through the fog, a large, ghostly shape appears, solidifying into a magnificent white elk. The elk approaches the shrine and takes a long drink from the cauldron.
As if noticing something, it raises its head high and alert, the red liquid having splashed over its white coat giving it a most macabre look. As swiftly as it arrived, the elk vanishes into the fog, which slowly dissipates, leaving a cross legged, meditating Humblodt and the shrine tender in front of an empty cauldron.
As the fog clears Ro walks up to look into the cauldron. Finding it empty she scratches her chin in confusion, plops herself down next to Humblodt, and tries to copy what he's doing.
Twiglet is enjoying his first night's sleep in a proper inn....after tossing and turning for an hour or so, he finally dozes off under the bed. He can't quite get used to a soft mattress yet
At breakfast the next day, Ro sits next to Humblodt with a stack of paper and starts trying to get him to explain what happened at the shrine last night.
Humblodt takes the paper and a piece of chalk. He begins sketching - a supplicant in front of a simple shrine, an offering in a blessed vessel, the apparition of an animist deity supping the lifeblood of the earth - drawn with heavy symbolism of life, death and renewal.
O well done! I commend your pains; And every one shall share i' the gains; And now about the cauldron sing, Live elves and fairies in a ring, Enchanting all that you put in.
“Back in the day, we used to conduct these rituals in the buff, but the practice died out after a number of unfortunate incidents with misplaced sickles”, he winces slightly.
Looking down at the drawing, she writes a question in small text along the margin of the page: "Should I leave one alive next time we fighting somebody? She cups her hand around it so Twiglet can't see, and once Humblodt has read the question she scribbles over it until it's completely unintelligible.
Other than learning about Humblodt's religion Ro doesn't have anything to do today so I'm happy to skip forward to when Twiglet gets back from scouting once everyone else is done.
Humblodt considers Ro's question carefully, over several hefty spoonfuls of porridge*, "Just like life should have meaning, so too death should also have meaning."
*Dwarf in an inn, it's got to be porridge.
I was going to write a load more deep & meaningful stuff, but watched Samuel L Jackson shooting people instead.
((Death does not bother Humblodt much - though he still rather averse to dying - and he doesn't judge others for killing. He himself wouldn't kill simply for sport, or out of some racial hatred, but neither would he go out of his way to save those who he didn't consider worthy of saving.))
Twiglet comes down to breakfast in the inn. It’s not late but he’s surprised to see Ro and Humblodt in the strange mix of writing, signing and talking that passes for conversation. As he sits down, Humblodt wordlessly pushes a bowl of grey mulch across the table at Twiglet. The Young thief had never eaten breakfast, let alone porridge, but he tucks I’m readily, picky eating was not something that improved survival in his old gang. You ate what you could and when you could.
Slurping at his porridge, Twiglet describes the sloppy nature of the Redbrands operation, their use of the tavern as some sort of meeting point and his suspicion of a base outside town. “They’re common thugs, not a proper thieves guild,” He states confidently. “If their anything like they look, there’ll be some jumped up hard man bully in charge. He’ll be using these mildly brainless morons to help him bully the whole town. “ he took a swig of ale from an unguarded mug, “I thought we could ask for some coin for getting rid of them...we only need to kick out the leader and the rest will bigger off “
"Best we go to the store and buy some more sacks then", grins Humblodt. The enthusiasm of this strange partnership of halfling and goblin is becoming infectious, even to him. Besides, it's been awhile since he's done any 'field work' and it wouldn't do to get soft.
If you do go the Miner's Exchange to talk to Halia, you notice that there are marking on the the building's sign. You recognise some of them as being the thief symbols for safety. The others are familiar in that you have seen them before but you do not know what they mean.

Ro winces in kind.

Ro nods and sits back, mulling over this new information.

Ro replies with a cocked eyebrow and a quick sign.

“Remove....?”

"Sack him", says Humblodt with a wink at Ro.
Ro smiles broadly and signs to Twiglet and Humblodt.

“Hang on,” Twiglet interrupts, “we need to find out who wants them removed and who can pay...a guildmaster, or town watch commander...or someone?”

“Halia seems the most likely. Seems no one else in this town has much of a spine.”
