// It is indeed Tuesday, because, why not... Faerun uses a ten-day week, so feel free to check the campaign page to see those days - and dammit, now I have to keep track of the days. //
Tuesday, 23 of Mirtul, 1494 DR, The Year of Twelve Warnings
As the firebolts strike the pooling blood, an iron-like smell wafts through the air around the group. There are scorch marks across the entire floor. The younger Zalboar looks on with a face of dejected acceptance. He shakily gets up and says, "I'll head back to the Flaming Fist. Who should I ask for? And is there anything specific you want me to tell them?"
"Just tell them you were sent by us." Oswin gives him everyone's names. "Tell them you father is still missing, and that you were almost kidnapped, but that we intervened. Take this gauntlet," he says, giving the man one of the black gauntlets he confiscated from the cultist. "Tell them that the kidnapper was a member of the Black Hand cult, and died from injuries sustained in the fight."
The young man nods in agreement, collects the gauntlet and gets ready to leave. He then tells the party, "My thanks. If it is of any help, I saw this one - " he points at the dead cultist " - come out of the alley across the way, the one shared with the bath house. I hope you can find them and put an end to them. I'd hate to see what this city would become if they had their way."
He departs down the road, sticking firmly in the middle of the path, at a fast jog.
A little less than halfway down the alley, the group reaches a separation between the back walls of the buildings facing the streets on either end of the alley. The wall to the south would be the backend of the bathhouse. The space between the two buildings is too small for anything but a tiny creature. There is a visible sewer grate at the intersection of the alleys - the one the group has been walking along and the one between the buildings.
Looking further ahead, the street, on which the bathhouse'main door is found, is visible ahead. Since gaining a sightline on it, there has been no visible activity.
The sun above is a little past its zenith.
Both Tzo-Tzo and Oswin catch the smell of death emanating from the sewer grate as they walk over it.
Does the sewer grate look like it can be moved? And is it big enough for a human to fit through?
As Oswin gets closer to the sewer grate, the smell of death becomes more prominent. Oswin notes the expected smells of refuse, excrement and stale water, but there is an unexpected and rather strong odor one would expect of rot - reminiscent of what it smells like when a rodent dies in the attic and it remains undiscovered for some time.
If Oswin were to give it a tug, he would notice it is very solidly built into the street - and that his hands would get very dirty. It operates more as a drain than an access point. The alleys are pitched a little lower than the street so that water and refuse makes its way to these alley drains. Every so often a cleaning crew comes through to pick up the larger refuse that cannot fit through the grate of the drain. Small animals would fit through, but no humanoid that you know of could.
Not about to touch the drain, Oswin says, "Smells like something crawled in there and died." He will otherwise continue to the bath house, mentally filing away the information for later.
Upon arrival, the party sees that the bathhouse is a one-story stuccoed building with stained-glass windows and clay roof tiles. Ten-foot-tall walls enclose a large courtyard outside the southeast corner of the building. The closed wooden doors to the courtyard are engraved with images of smiling nymphs dancing and frolicking in water.
Like most buildings in Baldur's Gate, some sides of the bathhouse share a wall with its neighbors, whereas dark alleys split between other neighboring structures. Like the bathhouse, the buildings on either side are single story with tiled roofs. One is marked as a butcher shop, the other, is unmarked.
Across the street, there is a blacksmith with some wares for sale, many hung up around the outdoor smithing area. Along with horseshoes and some household items, there are a few weapons, nothing fancy, and a couple of shields.
Not much has changed since you were here last, not but a half hour ago, or so.
Oswin will try and use directed applications of his firebolt to staunch the flow of blood.
"We should probably stop the blood from flowing into the streets. We don't need any extra attention on this. Oh...Tuesday*? Yeah, I think so."
After they are somehow able to stymie the rivulets of blood, Oswin will suggest they get back to investigating the bathhouse.
(*Substitute "Tuesday" for whatever the Faerûnian equivalent is 😄)
