"I'd tell you to go to hell, but it's hot enough here you might be there already," Penny nurses her wounded pride.
"My name is Penny. And I think the curses are more colorful when you're crossing cultural boundaries." She looks at Ormond. "Mostly, we want to be sure we're getting the story straight, but we barely understand these guys, and heard you were from up there," she gestures towards the "sky." "We're supposed to kill a giant snake? Or is Hippo-boy supposed to kill it by himself, 'cause that would be fine..."

Still rubbing his shin, Ormond offers, "We let the lie happen more as a defensive tactic in case the people here did not take... kindly... to outsiders. With that said, in all due fairness, the man can turn into a hippo. I don't think he'd be bothered that I share that bit of information given he flaunts it pretty often."
"And the lass is correct, I'm former Militia," Ormond says as he unconsciously scratches the bandages of his arm, "The type of former that - by now - is likely to get shot on sight if I'm recognized. That is enough reason for me to try and obstruct them. At first, I thought they were active down here for merely explorations sake... but I get the feeling it's something more. They also tend to leave the locals in much worst shape than when they first meet."
Ormond looks sidelong at Penny, with uneasiness in his eyes, but he continues speaking, "I was part of a Militia company that I assumed was on an exploratory mission down here. We were...attacked."
Ormond pauses for a brief, haunted, moment - his face reflecting as much.
Regaining his composure, he continues, "As... as far as I know, I am the only survivor, but there are likely others. I was taken in by a tribe - the Rionta. Then the militia found us. I woke up in a brig; I don't know what happened to them, but I fear the worst."
The woman shifts in her sitting position and sighs, “Well, that doesn’t seem like a load of croc to me, so I suppose that gets you some points. I’ll be honest with you, kiddo. At the time, we didn’t know much about what we were dealing with. Specifically, I ventured down here to research the creatures that tend to live between the layers, those monsters I mentioned. Didn’t even get far before one just leveled the place. Can you imagine that? Hundreds of thousands of Thal’s worth of military trains just decimated by one surly beast.“

"Fine," Ormond says to Penny, "but, if they're too big to be taken down, then what do you suggest we do? Go into hiding and hope they find us? It will only be a matter of time before they try to pin you under their thumb. It happened to me once already - I learned my lesson, so now I take it to them when I can."
He then looks at Annabelle, "They've grown more aggressive since you found your way down here, Annabelle. It will be only a matter of time before they subjugate or raze this village. You were part of their research teams - there must be something we can do to turn their monsters against them."

At some point in their conversation, he'd also ask if there's any locally sourced materials that can provide him the protection of his armor, without the het exhaustion attached.

Unfortunately, Deshi is nowhere near this conversation. They're still in the chief's tent, peering closely at the tapestry.
Once they've copied down everything they can, they take a walk about the village.
Then they attempt to ask someone about the strange gray stone that surrounds this place.
