Once we join up with the rest of the group I think we move on, trying to avoid the road if possible. If that isn't really possible (or there is no way to avoid being see due to a large flat plain or something) I think Rex and I go in front of the group incase we encounter anything.

You easily skirt around the hapless group of stragglers and continue your way down the path. After about a mile, everyone but Rex notices an area where the trail winds through a gap between two outcrops. This area fits the vague description that the stragglers mentioned for the likely ambush site.
As you get to the outcroppings, you hear a couple pebbles falling down the sides of the rock walls. Everyone make a reflex save and then roll initiative.
“I can keep it up for an hour. After that, I’d need to cast it again. But yeah, we’d definitely need to avoid that ambush squad...”
