After their rest, Ink examines the runes around the glowing archway trying to discern their meaning. He's careful not to touch the archway or the mist.
// Ink speaks and reads Giantish, but in all fairness, per the PHB, modern Giant uses Dwarven runes... //
He also examines the archway itself...
// Arcana Check(?) 19 //
He asks of Flint, "You have the identify learned, correct? Do you think you could cast it as a ritual and focus on the archway as you do so?"
Ink asks Rip, "Did you try lighting these iron scones? You were able to light the others."
He asks of Harshnag, "Could you tell us anything about this archway? Or the runes about it? I take it that the central statue is the All-Father. He's facing the archway so I assume that "He" is past those doors. What of the other statues? Do they represent his divine children or just a representation of each of the giant races?"
Ink can tell that the mithral-inlaid runes in the archway are magical, but they are definitely not dwarven. They are certainly ancient.
When you look from the 80-foot giant statue in the middle of the room, you notice that it has no face, while the other six giant statues do.
“Yes, that is Annam All-Father. The others are his children, our gods—specifically, the god of each giant race. Grolantor, Skoraeus Stonebones, Thrym, Surtur, Memnor, and Stronmaus.
“The runes there are ancient giantish runes, powerful magic. I recognize that last one, ise—it means frost—but I do not know the others. And yes, the oracle is through this archway. That much I know. But I didn’t expect the portal to be inactive.”
Ink writes down each of the runes in his spell book, commenting, "Ancient magic deserves a special page." He includes the phonetic spelling and meaning for the 'ise' rune.
"I suspect that each rune represents some aspect of each of your kind. 'Ise' for Thrym and the frost giants. I have a spell that 'may' be helpful, although this runic language is so old, I'm not sure," Ink says.
Ink casts as a ritual comprehend languages and attempts to translate the other runes.
// Where is the 'ise' rune in comparison to the other runes? How does that compare to Thrym's position in relation to the other giant gods? //
Ink asks the others, "Could one of you with a skilled eye for Investigation search the room for any possible compartments, levers or doors, that are NOT in plain sight? Perhaps there's an auxiliary location with instructions."
Ink asks Harshnag, "Have you ever activated the portal yourself?"
Kneeling in rows to each side of this statue are six statues half its size, each impressive in its own right and depicting a paragon of a type of giant: hill, stone, frost, fire, cloud, and storm. These smaller statues face the bigger one in the room’s center. In their outstretched arms, five of the giants hold weapons — gifts for their All-Father. Only the frost giant statue is unarmed.
Ink puts on a quizzical face, "Harshnag, is Thrym supposed to be holding something?"
// While Ink is ritually casting his spell, what is everyone else doing? If you like, you can certainly each roll Investigstion or Perception checks as Ink suggested. Flint can use his Guidance spell with one such attempt while also making a check of his own. //
“That’s what I was wondering,” says Harshnag. “Would stand to reason that Thrym would be armed with an axe, since he’s always depicted with one. But I haven’t seen an axe anywhere nearby.
”And no...I have never been here before, but I know enough about the layout to know where I’m going.”
The weapons set in each giant statue’s hands are being held out towards the All-Father statue like offerings, and are all obviously made of different materials (such as mithral, iron, and bone), while Thrym’s hands are held out bare, presenting nothing.
The ise rune is on the bottom right of the glowing archway. Thrym’s statue is directly north of Annam.
Crownsguard considers for a moment, “Perhaps you should place the axe into his hand? However, at the same time, with the focus upon gifts, it may be considered rude to present the gift to one of Annam’s sons. From my experience human court, gifts may be presented by proxy to one’s lord. It is often prefaced with, ‘My Lord, forgive your servant -enter name here-. May he find your favor. He has sent me to offer you this humble gift in his stead.’ Or something along those lines. Does that help?”

Harshnag nods, then hesitates. “Should I be the servant? Or should someone else be the servant?”
“Thyrm would be the servant of Annam, as his son. In this case, you would be Thyrm’s servant. I believe.” Crownsguard pauses, “I am still hazy on giant culture.”

Harshnag nods again and goes before the statue of Annam. “I’ve never actually spoke to the gods before. I hope I do it right.”
Kneeling and presenting his glowing greataxe, he says, “All-Father, forgive your servant Thrym. May he find your favor. He has sent me to offer you this humble gift in his stead.”
Harshnag kneels with head bowed for several seconds, but nothing happens. He looks around. “Hrrm...any other ideas?”
Marav just watches, Steele has come in and landed on his shoulder. He looks uncomfortable and a little lost. His hands clench into fists and are released over and over again. He continues to look everywhere, expecting another attack.
He paces around, looking at everything. "Steele keep looking for anything that doesn't belong."
Harshnag notices Marav looking around, the light of the swirling, glowing mist casting a dramatic light on his face. “Everything okay there?” He asks the half orc.
Harshnag reaches up and gently places his axe in Thrym’s massive stone hands. But once more, nothing happens.
Marav and Steele look up and down the room, but find no secret exits. There are three sets of double doors—the main ones on the west wall, and the slightly smaller ones on the north and south walls, both of which are frozen shut and would need to be pulled open—and the two iron portcullises that lead to the upper levels of the entry hall.
Crownsguard would frown if he could, “Well, that idea didn’t work.” However, he will walk over to the runes. Being a creature made of numerous runes himself, perhaps he feels a certain kinship. He brushes his hand along the Eis rune, “I believe that the frost giant definitely has something to do with this.”

The ise rune glows brightly, and the room darkens for the briefest of moments. The sound of thunder is heard from somewhere in the distance, and swirling cloud appears and expands high over the head of Annam’s statue.
