“Mob justice is not justice. Letting the populous loose on him would likely be little better than throwing him to the wolves.” Duncan says, looking back to the wizard. “And as Sildar says, the people of this town need to have faith that the system will protect them.”
Kayassa: You do not get a response, but a faint breeze carrying the scent of your home does again blow through.
“Sur-sure… whatever y-you want. Just d-do.. it!” The townmaster yells as he retreats hurriedly to a door at the back of the room and runs inside, slamming the door.
You then wait a moment before Sildar speaks with a smile. “Why don’t we move outside for the time being to discuss things. Harbin… is… a character.”
He then begins moving to the door. The family follows still remaining on the fringes of the group, and as far away from Glasstaff as possible. Joining Sildar, you come back into the afternoon sun as it is setting, bathing the town hall in golden light. “Now,” Sildar continues. “As much as I believe you folk should accompany Iarno to Neverwinter, there are still some things we— you need to take care of here in Phandalin… Gundren for one. As far as I know, Cragmaw Castle is still our only lead, and finding it as quickly as possible seems in Gundren’s best interest should he be trapped there.” He pauses, looking to Droop. “I’ve been meaning to ask about him… perhaps your goblin… friend? Perhaps he may be of help?”
(OOC: It is also important to remember the arrangement you had with Halia Thornton— owner of the Phandalin Miner’s Exchange. She offered you 100 gp to eliminate the Redbrand leader, whom the outlaws call Glasstaff, and bring her any correspondence found in the leader’s quarters. Just food for thought; your choice what to do with it, just thought I should remind you since it has admittedly been awhile since then.)
Kayassa shrugs as she moves to pull the wizard out of the room, remembering they had been offered money to deal with him. Maybe if they turned her over to the woman that offered the job they would get more money out of it.
“Let us take him to Halia. Though we shouldn’t just leave him in her hands, she may have some idea of how to deal with him, as she is the one who specifically asked.” Duncan says. “By the way. Did you find anything else that she may be interested in?”
Orro says he thinks handing him over to Halia is a solid idea - she was the one who put them on the task and she would have a better idea of what to do with him than the purported leader of the town. Then the trio could get some rest and then take on the castle to find Gundren.
Kayassa will try to quiet Duncan down before he says that in front of Sildar. Failing that she will then attempt to move the wizard along at a faster pace.
Kayassa begins to bring Orro and Duncan over and away from the others to discuss plan for the future. Duncan speaks, and is overheard by Sildar who will begin to walk over towards the group as they talk.
“Ah, em, sorry to interrupt, but I happened to overhear…” he begins. “So… you had a pre-arranged deal with Halia, the um… owner of the Phandalin Miner’s Exchange, right?” He pauses and looks to you all. “While I can’t say I know this woman, I’m not one who can order you to do anything with your prisoners… just… as long as you are sure you can trust her. Based on what you said, Iarno is dangerous, and I would just be sure she can properly take care of him.”
Then, as you begin to keep walking, Sildar says his farewells. “Well, I wish you all well, and hope to see you later at the inn. Hopefully we can talk there and discuss what to do from here on out.”
Ok, so the plan is to now go to Halia’s? What do you plan to do with the family? Is there anything else you want to talk with the townmaster about? What would you like to do?
(I assumed the family was from the area and was free to go to their homes? If they need help Orro would try, but in general he wanted them to chase their own destiny.)
He’s also fine with taking Iarno to Halia, not being sure if there was a problem with Sildar knowing about this. She seemed capable, or at least knowledgeable.
Kayassa sighs but pushes the wizard along towards where Halia was, sending the family off to inn with a few gold pieces so thst they can get something to eat and the like.
The family does have a home in Phandalin, but are much more willing to head to the inn with the gold Kayassa. Though they don’t necessarily say it, it is obvious that the last thing this family wants to do is return home and re-live the trauma of their kidnapping. The mother happily takes her children to the inn to get some food and catch up with some of their closer friends in the town.
And so with that, you all head back to the Miner’s Exchange to speak with Halia. It is a short but pleasant walk across town, and you arrive there right during the final rush hour at the exchange when most of the miners have come back from a day of work and are getting paid. Dwarves, human, elves alike are all milling around the small building, waiting for their turn inside with Halia. Most carry various types of mining equipment and heavy packs filled with ore and other semi-precious stones found at their respective dig-sites.
At an estimation, there appear to be 20 ish different humanoids waiting around the exchange. Not all are in line, and some just seem to be loitering or waiting for a friend. But, with the wizard and thug in tow, as you approach the building, what would you like to do?
Orro grabs Iarno's rope bindings and maneuvers him inside, ending the prolonged shove at the counter right in front of Halia. He gets heratetntion. "Halia! Here's the staff of glass ye' ordered. The fella in charge downtown was too nervous teh take 'im. You're our best shot, and we thought ye might enjoy this particular delivery. Happy to take this somewhere less... festive."
Kayassa will move to stand with Orro as it seems they will have to wait in order to see the woman. If the call seems like it will get them in sooner she will push the bound wizard forward.
Orro authoritatively strides towards the storefront, to the chagrin of most of the other customers who grumble and groan as he does so. They however don’t do much more after seeing Orro clad in shining armor and a weapon at his belt. Kayassa and Duncan then follow suit, quickly moving after Orro before the door closes once again.
Inside, Halia is in final agreements with a grizzled, squat human man who takes the pouch of jingling coin as Halia takes his findings to the back room. The man looks to your group, frowning as he moves out of the way and out of the exchange to allow you to speak to Halia.
Halia stops, mid-step, turning back to the group with a smirk. “Took ye’ long enough!” She says, setting the bag down on the counter, her lips curling up into a smile as she inspects the wizard. “Y’know after awhile I didn’t think ye’ would even be coming back at all… but here you are!” Halia then begins to move around the counter, opening the small gate separating her from the party as she draws closer. “Would one of you care to stay back with the… prisoners, while we go speak privately in the back?” She asks, face again taut and serious like normal, and motioning towards the door back behind the counter.
Kayassa pushes forward to volunteer to go and talk with her, having given an innocent wave to the people they had passed on the way into the room where Halia conducted her business.
Duncan is keeping a firm grip on the wizard. Both to ensure that he tries nothing underhanded, but also to ensure that he isn’t simply given over to someone for vigilante justice.
"Perhaps the people who live in this town should be allowed the chance to achieve their own form of justice. Save us the trip." Orro says gruffly.
“Mob justice is not justice. Letting the populous loose on him would likely be little better than throwing him to the wolves.” Duncan says, looking back to the wizard. “And as Sildar says, the people of this town need to have faith that the system will protect them.”
