"...anyone else hear that?" Ilyara asked, suddenly on edge and working to haul herself back up the rope and out of the trap with a quickness. "Wasn't just me, right? Please tell me it wasn't just me...or maybe tell me it was just me. Maybe that'd be for the best..."
In response to Toots' efforts, you all hear a very faint but distinct chuckle coming from the air.
Toots immediately grabs hold of her Lute, and touching her fingers to her head says “By Carnac the Magnificent!” to cast detect thoughts.
You can also use this spell to detect the presence of thinking creatures you can't see. When you cast the spell or as your action during the duration, you can search for thoughts within 30 feet of you. The spell can penetrate barriers, but 2 feet of rock, 2 inches of any metal other than lead, or a thin sheet of lead blocks you. You can't detect a creature with an Intelligence of 3 or lower or one that doesn't speak any language.
Once you detect the presence of a creature in this way, you can read its thoughts for the rest of the duration as described above, even if you can't see it, but it must still be within range.

OOC:
Okay, Toots hasn’t used any part of the spell that triggers a Saving throw yet, still just scanning around, not even reading surface thoughts yet. So as long as she maintains Concentration she should still be able to keep scanning every 6 seconds as an Action. Yeah? Or did something else happen?
Ilyara managed to make her way back up from the spike pit, noticing Toots' intent look but saying nothing of it just then. "So the pit trap's nothing but. Bunch'a spikes, bunch'a folks what found out the spikes were there the hardest way. No sign I could see of any sorta button or doohickus that might be the key to this place. Don't fall in, if ye can at all help it."
At which point she flipped the tip of one ear back towards Toots and tried her hardest to ask Tommary and Elyona with nothing but the most inquisitive possible expression what the heck the other halfling was doing.
Tommary mimes, pointing to Toots, then putting his hands to the side of his temples as if he were really concentrating, then gestures to include the whole room as the object of Toots action. Then shrugs in the universal gesture of "I dunno if this is gonna work."

“Uhhh… guys…. I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but… something is watching us, and aware of what we’re doing. Not only that, but I think they are some form of telepathic. Or something like that anyway. But they are not anywhere within range of my spell to detect them. Either that or I’m loosing it.” Toots shrugs but maintains concentration until the spell ends or she is forced to drop it.

Unless anyone else has either thought of any new ideas, or has been sitting on any ideas that haven’t been put forward, at this point I can only see as we have 3 options:
Turn back and try to go through the nested doors to CONTROL HQ.
Try one of our less absurd ideas (with safety precautions) and see if it works.
Make some Ability checks and see if we can learn anything new.
An Arcana check might give us new info about the room, it’s layered enchantments, and what might help us get past them.
A Nature check might lend insight as to the likelihood of those Polymorph ideas we floated working:
Could the Giant Spider* effectively cross the room? Could it’s web help get everyone across?
*(Mechanically, RAW there is no difference listed between them, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a difference. 🤷♂️)
Toots only has an Intelligence Score of 10, so including Jack of all Trades, she has a total +1 to Nature, and with full proficiency a total +3 to Arcana.
Unfortunately I think Toots has (or is tied at having) the best bonus Arcana, and she has Halfling Luck just in case. Does anyone else have a higher bonus or any features or traits that might yield better results?
I’m also pretty sure that at least Tommary has a better bonus to Nature checks.
Toots could Bardically Inspire Tommary for the Nature Check, and he could Inspire Toots (or whomever) for the Arcana check. If anyone here knows guidance, that could get tacked onto those too. If anyone could help out on those checks, that’s another possible buff.
OOC: Tommary does have that +6 expertise in Nature. I suppose I could wrack my brain, with some inspiration and guidance to determine whether I feel this unnaturally treated surface might be readable by say suction cupped feat, giant snail slime ... or wait a sec...
"How long could you last before you dried out and died if you became a giant star fish? It's either that or I say we set up the big ladder on the floor and Illy sort of rows us along with her metal stick thingy. She sits at the front, sets the rod in front of her, and pulls us all along the sliding under the rod. Reset, repeat. It may take a while, but I think it'd work.
Or, ooh ooh, you become a giant turtle, big enough to lodge itself in the gap. We all slide down to you and cross you like a turtle bridge, and sort of person chain ourselves to the next peak, securing ourselves up there with the rod, then we sort of brigade slide you up the floor wax (I did something there, I saw in a vault one time), then slide you down to the next breach, and we're onward!
I gotta a lot ideas, can't really vouch for quality though, that's the problem with untested genius."

For lack of any better ideas, Toots pulls the door open, “Excuse me, 9, could you please hold this door open for me?” With that (literally) out of the way, she sits down cross legged in the doorway and starts pulling asorted items from her various pouches to run some experiments.
She pulls out the holy symbol of Yeenoghu that she found among the bones and bars under the collapsed ladder to see if it has any affect on the floor. If that yields no results she pulls out the little jar of wax she got from the goblin hoard to see if that will stick to the floor. Next she tries to hammer an iron spike into the floor. She melts some wax from a candle onto it, she shoots it with a crossbow bolt, she tries marking it first with charcoal, then chalk, abrasing it with steelthistle cloth, rubbing it with soap, then soap & water to try washing the enchantment off, she attempts to scratching it with a diamond, pours a little oil on it to disrupt the “finish,” and then she tries setting that oil ablaze. She tries various foodstuffs from her rations, she even tries to prestidigitate it to be warm, dirty, clean, and flavored….
Tommary ducks out of the doorway when Toots lets loose the crossbow bolt, less the bolt knock him off balance on a ricochet and sends him into the pit, knowing that to be a very bad thing..
"Before, the ladder had something to attach to; not sure it will attach to anything here; but it is worth a try."
