I'm pretty sure we're too late in the game for Tommary's Speak with Animals to be in effect still, and he's not going to burn a spell slot and action on it. But he will exhort the aquamanticores to rally to their kin as he Errol Flynn or Obi Wan jumps from one kayak to the free kayak Acrobatics 21, maneuvers the kayak forward off-handed gondola style (Tommary made up that small craft operation style back in his locks and docks days, no he was never trained in small craft operation, like I said he made it up) gonna say Athletics 25 and then if he's not gone into the drink he takes a defensive flourish at the broken mold jell-0, Attack: 16 Damage: 18.

The gel-o blob looks like it is starting to lose shape. It is partly deflated and no longer cube shaped.

Bobbing on the kayak, fighting to keep on her paws as Tommary bounced around like a kabuki wrestler, Ilyara glared daggers at the ooze monster. Grumbling dire imprecations under her breath, she tried her mojo one more time, her imprecations morphing seamlessly into Traveler's chant as she drew up the Traveler's bells once more.

The sea lion and cube turn into a macabre bloody jello meat salad, tearing and dissolving each other. There are a few quivering pieces that remain of the creatures.
The water level is getting noticeably lower, you see a grated drain on the lowest tier sucking down water, sand, blob-o, and blood - not large enough to endanger the party or the other sea lions.

OOC: RAW, whenever ant creature spends an hour doing short rest type stuff it happens. Players often declare their characters want to “take a short rest,” because… game mechanic. And DMs accept that because game mechanic1. However, the rules not once mention that players even can ask for a short resr.. They only state what triggers/Counts as t’s as a short rest, and what a short rest triggers, grants. So the way WotC has written those rules the ways it actually sposta go are:
Players declare their characters wish to spend approximately an hour or so tending to wounds and perhaps equipment, eating a snack or light meal, reading, or whatever, so as to be refreshed before continuing. Then the DM is sposta figure out if anything randomly comes along that might interrupt that period and let the players know if they have been able to sufficiently refresh themselves or have been interrupted.
The DM tells the players that their characters have spent a sufficient amount of time in whatever circumstance that they have gained the benefits of a short rest.
I know it seems kinda arbitrarily noodley, but the difference is that if players ask the DM for a rest, then the DM is the one who says yes or no. If instead the players narrate their characters’ actions and intentions and the DM narrates the outcome, then the world/circumstances/environment/monsters determine whether or not the PC’s have rested. It’s the same distinction that lets the DM honestly say “I didn’t kill your PC, the monster/villain/trap did.”
“Hunh. I was worried that thing would be a lot harder to kill than that. I just hope those aquamanticores don’t get hungry again before we’re ready to go through there. Is anyone hurt bad?” Is everyone alright? Ely, that beam of light was amazing!”
OOC: [preamble : It's sort of moot since we're all taking a SR now, when a few of us actualy need to] I think Sposta's right, I think in this PbP format we all should be more mechanically clear/explicit with things like SR. Honestly, I went for my flourish, thought I had two available (because of "meh" Bardbuilt) and saw one ticked and that got me confused. I scrolled back to find the Friday Night Lights scene (ha) to track that down but then saw the section where we did take a meal break and I wasn't sure whether we had delcared a short rest or not. Had I been more aware that I had something I could have recouped, I probably would have asked the meal be a short rest, but at the time I probably had forgotten I spent the inspiration a month and a half back and didn't use the down time to review my sheet since the RP dialogue was more focused on strategizing the tiers assaults, we just happened to be eating while we were strategizing. I also don't know if I would have asked for an SR to get back one inspiration. I mean Tommary showed himself as capable as the world's best designed action figure after all.
IC:
Tommary looks over his acid pocked leathers, "Toots, I am stung, just stung ... that those Aquamanticores didn't rally to the cause sooner ... I hope they go into a lollipop* coma when they're done lapping the rest of that up. Sour patch bags like that thing are all flavor, no real feed, so a bad meal serves those aquamanticores right." Tommary then produces a buffing rag and a tin of some waxy orange cream.** "Why don't you play some of that soothing music while I get myself back ready for my close up." He then offers a rag clenching fist bump to Illybefore getting to work on his outfit, wondering if besides the polish, his care kit comes with a patch kit for his quarter cape.
*Sticking with Tommary general ignorance when it comes to varieties of candy.
**A lot of "fancy clothes" come with spot care kits, patches, buttons, etc. Given his investment in orange leather, of course Tommary fancy clothes comes with a few items to care for that stuff in the field.
"I took a bad hit," Ilyara said in answerance to Toots' question, already perched in the sand and slowly gathering herself. "I got some wind though, can gather myself a bit. Just...gotta take a breather to collect myself and stick some'a my fur back on, and then I can get back to work," she said, flashing an only mildly shaky thumbs-up at Toots. "That pillar-of-light spell was pretty neat, wasn't it? And frankly I'm impressed with Tallboots' ability not to fall into the drink while gallivantin' about on a bunch of wobbly boats stickin' swords in uglies. Other'n th' damn thing catchin' me by surpriose and giving me an involuntary chiropractic adjustment, I think we pulled that off pretty clean."
{Gonna roll every gorram hit die Ilyara has, and take them in sequence until I hit at or above 16hp back. Heh, the book says I can spend hit die in order instead of having to gamble on how many will get me where I need and by gum I'm gonna do it! Especially since Ilyara's CON mod is zero, so the calculations are easy. Will also throw a d6, in case Toots does decide to do Song of Rest. Which I keep forgetting bards can do.
On the subject of short rests: gonna side with having them asked for or otherwise specifically mentioned, just because that's the only way I'm gonna know whether I can push the SR button on Ilyara's sheet and get her stuff back/spend those hit dice. It's just cleaner to establish a rest is happening and sort it out then, rather than trying to retroactively apply it. In some cases when everybody legit forgets and something like a Channel Divinity or an Inspiration might sway the story, then we can discuss it, but overall I'm a fan of making it clear when rests are happening.
(OOC: So four hit dice expended, for either 16HP or 20 if Toots does Song of Rest. I'll mark those off on Ilyara's sheet and take the 16, will add the 4 if/when it happens.)
