So I’ve been slowly purchasing sourcebooks and adventures over the last 6-7 months but haven’t actually joined a campaign. Until I discovered this place. It’s clearly not going to be hard to join in on some adventures and I’m pumped about that. I’ve got a couple questions just so I don’t get myself in a bind right off the bat.
First and foremost, should a player use a adventure book during the campaign or just when creating a character for the specific scenario?

Most adventure books don't have things intended for the players to use. Adventures are meant for the DM to read and run, and the players only know what the DM tells them. (On this note, it is rather bad etiquette for players to read the adventure their DM is running).
A select few adventures do have things for players, like background options, or rarely, setting specific races. The DM can tell the players these options are allowed, and once added to the character sheet the player shouldn't need the adventure book any more.

It's incredibly bad form to read through a campaign book prior to chargen. You absolutely should tailor make your character to your DM's setting, but that's why your DM should hold some sort of "session zero" to convey setting info to you.

Players typically do not use Adventure books at all, only DMs do. Both players and DMs use Sourcebooks however.
