Check out this race and let me know what you think of the balance on how i set up flight for level one use.
The premise is that its a young race born from Kenku mystics who somehow were able to end the curse that prevented them from flying and speaking by dedicating their energy and faith to a trio of goddess's, their offspring are "blessed" instead of cursed and naturally gravitate to being bards. The young avian hatch looking like Magpi or Jay in coloration, so their still thematically related to the crow/raven base of the Kenku (ie. family Corvidae).
You don't know what fear is until you've witnessed a drunk bird divebombing you while carrying a screaming Kobold throwing fire anywhere and everywhere.
The flight rule seems overly complex, but if you like the flavor of it over just having a flight speed, you should probably set a DC for the Athletics check. Or, make it so they can fly without exhaustion for 1+Con Mod rounds once per short rest? Should make the book keeping easier than expending bonus actions every round to move.

Thanks for your input! Ill def set the check mod, lol, should have caught that part. Ill prob add the 1+con per short rest to it as well. Ran one game so far and having one character with flight did not really seem OP at all. The main concern is that many classes need really high level to get access to unlimited flight capability. So i was trying to keep it in line with other race/class combonations.
Consider just making the flight similar to the tabaxi dash to simplify things "On your turn, you can choose to gain a fly speed of 50 feet when you move. Once you use this ability you can't again until at least one turn has passed."
The guidance mechanic doesn't specify an activation (and I would consider just putting the mechanics in) "When you make an ability check you can choose to add 1d4 to the result, either before or after you roll. You can use this ability 3 times and recover expended uses when you finish a long rest"
No other race lets you pick additional class skills. I would just say you gain two skill proficiencies of your choice.
