Hello, I'm working on my first campaign and I am including little easter eggs for my players to find.
One of these is a creature in the form of a cat. I want the creature to be something more powerful but prefers the cat shape. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Both Imp and Quasit have animal shape changing capabilities (rat, raven and spider for Imp or Bat, Centipede or Toad for Quasit), so the easiest way may be to tweak one of those and have a cat form in place of one of the standard ones. Both would be pretty low level CR options. Going a little higher in CR you have a Violet Faerie Dragon which has a POlymorph ability so maybe it likes adopting a cat form for a few hours and doing "jerk cat" things such as pushing vases off of shelves as a prank.

* Need a character idea? Search for "Rob76's Unused" in the Story and Lore section.
You could always use a tressym, and give it the ability to turn into a normal cat. A Tressym is basically just a magical cat with wings that can detect poisons and invisible creatures. It’s even still CR0, but you could always need it up a little if you wanted while you’re giving it the ability to change into a normal cat. If you don’t have access to it it’s in Storm King’s Thunder and can probably be purchased for $2.
The other thing you could do is homebrew something like the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Basically just take a normal cat and let it turn invisible and speak.
Or, to poach form Magic the Gathering...how about a Displacer Kitten? Take a normal cat, add on the Discplacer and Avoidance abilities of a Displacer Beast and have a cute black furred little fey monster.

Sphinx, Displacer Beast, Rakashasas, tabaxis, tressym, razorclaw shifter, Androsphinx, Gynosphynx, Dire Lion (or feline type), Griffon, Lamia, manticore, Crag Cat, Roving Mauler, Hellcat, Kamadan, Kamatlan, Red Tiger, Sabu Lord, Spectral panther, Fey Panther, Sand cat, Swamplight Lynx, Luck Eater, Jana-nimr, Arraccat, Dragonne, Lammasu, Krenshar, Thylacine, there are 7 types of demon with feline attributes. And don't forget you can proceed any feline name with the prefix were- as well.
I would highly suggest you pick the look you like, and homebrew on top of that. But here are the first felines I thought of.

I am not sure what my Spirit Animal is. But whatever that thing is, I am pretty sure it has rabies!
Some dragons can shapeshift into other creatures. I like the idea of an enormous fire breathing monster transforming into a cat because they like getting their back scratched.
Human. Male. Possibly. Don't be a divider. My characters' backgrounds are written like instruction manuals rather than stories. My opinion and preferences don't mean you're wrong. I am 99.7603% convinced that the digital dice are messing with me. I roll high when nobody's looking and low when anyone else can see.🎲 “It's a bit early to be thinking about an epitaph. No?” will be my epitaph.
Then feel free to use it. If you want to, if you have a subscription you can PM me the “join” link to a private campaign for two and I’ll respond with the URL for the monster so you can add it to your collection. I even programmed the rollables.

I don't have a subscription, sorry, but I saved the image and will use it for reference. ^^
There are a few creatures in Dungeons & Dragons that can take on a human form. The most common of these is the doppelganger, which is a shape-shifting creature that can assume the form of any humanoid creature. Other creatures that can take on a human form include the vampire, lycanthrope, and hag. Each of these creatures has its own unique abilities and motivations, so it's important to research each one before deciding which one is right for your story.

This is amazing, thank you!!
I'm excited, it's a good group of mostly new players so we're muddling through Waterdeep together!
I love this so much!!

If the party doesn’t have a healer you make them a Druid with healing spells that will help the party if they are nice to its cat form.
Is this a reference to Goose from Captain Marvel?
