I've know about these types of dragons since I've started watching a d&d campaign on youtube using 3.5e. At first I thought it was a Hombrew creature, but seeing that Wizards of the coast brought the sapphire dragon in. Now I'm just curious why they hadn't published anything about them until recently for 5e?
They are neutral Dragons based on gemstones the way metallic dragons are on metals. They’re a thing in Forgotten Realms a little bit and there’s a ton of stuff about them in the 2e book Council of Wyrms on DTRPG.
Gem dragons traditionally never got a lot of screen time compared to chromatic or metallic dragons. They're psionic in nature, which led to them not getting much presence in the rules. They also have a generally neutral outlook that leads them have a far less active presence in the lore.

Find your own truth, choose your enemies carefully, and never deal with a dragon.
"Canon" is what's factual to D&D lore. "Cannon" is what you're going to be shot with if you keep getting the word wrong.
As 6th Lyran Guard notes, the gem dragons are psionic.
I generally prefer neutral dragons to good dragons, as one can't ever be too sure about them. Will this dragon eat me? Is it friendly? Is it tricking me? There's a lot of RP and story potential with these guys.

Thanks 😊. I forgot about the psionic part.
I think that makes gem a lot more interesting the the other 2 dragon types
Imagine you and your friends raiding a gem dragon’s lair to find a magic engagement ring for your girlfriend or boyfriend. Kind of like the Ring of the Nibelungs.
Has anybody done up stats on dragonborn related to gem dragons?
Not that I’ve heard about, but their favored class would probably be psionicist (like most dragonborn’s would be sorcerer) and a lot of them would probably be wild talents.
@patrickdees I just realized why Wizards hasn’t done anything official with gem dragons yet except the one sapphire dragon entry. Cause there are also no official psionics rules for 5e yet either.

Wizards should really get on that. Can you imagine two casters or psionic martial subclasses duking it out with a gem dragon? Thatd be awesome.
They've put out a few versions of psionic rules in Unearthed Arcana, with varying degrees of how well they work. We might see something released next year.

From the results of the last survey I’ll bet it’s back to the drawing board.

I love gem dragons. Their god’s name is Sardior the Ruby Dragon. There’s also a Heartquest book called Ring of the Ruby Dragon.
I dont think I've ever read about them, what are they about?

Matt Colville has a whole set of gem dragons in his book, Strongholds and Followers. This is a great book Matt sells in hardcover.
Cum catapultae proscriptae erunt tum soli proscript catapultas habebunt
I have been using Gemstone Dragons since 2e.

So what have WotC not introduced them back until now?

Someone did a few months ago, I helped them with the coding in the homebrewer. I don’t remember who, and don’t know if they ever published them.
