Ya I did it told them the bard should have been a wizard subclass or make a wizard subclass along those lines so it just not another necromancer. On the warlock I said make Form of Dread a short rest refresh over the proficiency bonus uses. Then I really want the warlock and I might try playing the bard one just cause I like getting away from all the music crap lol
Both of these subclasses are bad and boring. Unsure how to fill out the survey when my response to the document was to roll my eyes and resoundingly ignore its existence after that. Undead patron is mostly just a bad attempt to fix Undying patron, and nobody has a clue what the bard's issue is.
Honestly almost afraid to hit the survey; my dissatisfaction shouldn't take away other people's fun, but MAN these two suck...
Yeah. But people who answered the survey 'truthfully' destroyed the Alchemist artificer and ruined/aborted several of my favorite bits of UA. If you want these things you should be telling me to zip my lip, not tell Wizards "these are terrible", ne?
I think there was a mixed reaction to these Subclasses.
I liked the concept of both but had issues with some of the abilities.
The only real issue I had with the bard is that I don't like rolling on charts for abilities. No not strong enough. I HATE rolling on charts for abilities. It is only suitable for Wild Magic.
The Undead Patron is great, in concept, but poorly executed in my opinion. My two main issues was with doubling the power of Eldritch Blast, but that is an easy fix. The second was the way Spirit Projection worked. Leaving the body behind and it being a concentration ability was just too much of a headache to deal with. Also it didn't fit with the wide variety of possible Undead that the warlock could be serving. For instance, why would a Warlock with a Death Knight or Vampire Patron take on the attributes of a Wraith? I think it needs to be switched out with something a bit broader in theme. Mortal Husk was on my list of odd abilities, but it doesn't bother me as much as Spirit Projection.
Still doesn't necessarily speak Warlock to me. Just go Tomelock and pick the spells fitting the character you are envisioning if you want something like that. Perhaps even multiclass if you really want the random tales as a Warlock (as DM I'd let you use the Tome as your spellcasting focus for the bard).
I could see it as a warlock, kinda like the witch in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.
Personally, I loved the concept of the College of Spirits Bard...in that they are evoking the actual memories of long-forgotten stories.
That's totally a Bard thing.
Likewise, having access to nearly the entire Necromancy or Divination spell list is really neat...their are some great spells on those lists.
"Guidance" at a distance is pretty useful...but your opinion of the feature depends on how much you like "Guidance".
Plus, a minor damage / healing boost. Useful.
I would just say...reformat the "Tales" similiar to the Fighter "Battlemaster"...let the Bard pick 3 "tales" every long rest, and switch them around at their leisure...then unlock the more powerful ones at higher levels. Simple. Reliable.
"Undead" Warlock is just overwhelming necrotic POWER...at the cost of losing your humanity, or your soul, or whatever...
I mean, were you even using it?
I like to judge a subclass partially based on shenanigans they can get up to...and the Undead Warlock just seems FUN.
You become a walking necrotic BOMB...you transform into a MONSTER...you can send your soul to scout ahead, terrify the village, and make a grand entrance...FUN.
By all means, they should tweak what's required...but I'm really digging the styles.

I think the Bard is great, it’s the Warlock I could pass on.

I think College of Spirits is a bad subclass for Bard, and I think Undead Patron is terrible for the Warlock.
......
I think College of Spirits is a great subclass for Warlock, and Undead is awesome for Bard. Swap them around.
I don't see Warlocks as storytellers or Bards as servants of the undead, but to each their own.
She/Her Player and Dungeon Master
Don't think storyteller- think Binder. Think Vestige Pact. Think Requiem bard and necrodancer.
I could see it as a warlock, kinda like the witch in Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves.
But I still think the bard is a better fit.
