I just started playing D&D and thought it would be cool to play around with character building. I got a regular subscription but it seems like there are not really any more choices than when I had the free one. Am I missing something? I can't see any feats or character archetypes etc.
The subscriptions grant you increased capacity to store stuff, pretty much, you're still required to buy the books individually, or have them shared by a DM who has the Master Subscription.
For the most part, subscriptions are useful for players with a bunch of active characters or DM's who use the encounter builder and share content to their campaigns.
Hero subscriptions remove ads and allow for unlimited character creation slots. Master subscriptions do that plus allow already purchased content to be shared with up to 3 campaigns you are in.
The only ways to get additional content are to
buy the books in the marketplace
buy the individual races/feats/etc from the marketplace
be in a campaign with content sharing enabled where someone else in the campaign owns that content.
OK I think I understand - thank you for the responses. To Clarify:
So there is no real way for me to just dip my toe into DnD via DndBeyond? I either have to pay a few hundred dollars for the content, buy specific pieces for one character at a time, or get somebody (DM) to loan me the books?

No.
There's Basic rules online available for free. The mighty google can often get you where you need to be. In person, it would be a case of, "hey, I'm interested. Can I see your book real fast so I can see what's what?" Or a case of, "hey, I'm interested in the game and you have the books. Do you think you could run me through a game and maybe tonight I can borrow your PHB so I can make a character?"
If what you're asking for is the ability to play a game on your own time, in your own space, then you need to buy things. In person you might want to play a boardgame. To play it, you buy the boardgame. Online, you might want to play a video game. To play it, you buy the video game. D&D is a game with books - either physical or digital. People get paid to create them and they cost money to either program or print. We need to pay for such things.
If there are specific things that aren't in the basic rules that you have access to outside of DNDBeyond, you can homebrew them for your own use (don't publish).

Subscriptions don't get you extra content. Subscriptions give you benefits on DDB, but content requires the purchase of individual content or books.
