Hello, i'm new here, i know D&D but i've stopped at the 3.5, so i guess things have changed.
I''m interested to geton again and so i've got some question, mostly what is considered as comon, original or totally out of question in characters creation. I have some ideas and i don't really know what is allowed or not( i know it mostly depends of the GM), so i will expose atleast two.
A Fire Genasi barbarian and a Drow (surfacer) Druid, just tell if those are stupid or else, thanks in advance.
Definitely depends on the DM. The Barbarian seems fine, you may want to reconsider the surfacer Drow due to their inherent Sunlight Hypersensitivity. "You have disadvantage on attack rolls and on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight when you, the target of your attack, or whatever you are trying to perceive is in direct sunlight."
Half-Drow doesn't have this penalty, so it's easier on the player. However, if you don't mind playing hard mode then go for full Drow!
Unlike 3.5, pretty much any race/class/background (backgrounds are new) combination can work, and work well. Some may be a bit better than others, but everything is viable. Much like 3.5, it will depend on the campaign world as far as whether or not an idea fits in, as some DMs may ban some races or classes from their games. This can be true for people playing in published material in the forgotten realms, or in homebrew. So, I'd say find a DM and find out what their house rules are before you get too invested in an idea.
The other factor is Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, a supplement that came out fairly recently. In it, there are rules for adjusting your standard racial ability score bonuses and other features. These rules are optional, so, again, check with your DM to see if they're allowed.
From another player who just recently returned to D&D after a long hiatus since 3.5, welcome back! The way I see it, 5e still keeps all the core concepts of 3.5 and just streamlines it so there's less rules crunch to work through. Mechanically it's more focused on versatility, mainly giving players and DMs different choices to play around with, so as mentioned above most character concepts are at least theoretically plausible, assuming your DM is cool with it.
Hello, i've done a character, the fire Genasi i've mentioned above, but im not sure if i've done things right, i've tried to stay classic as much as possible, if someone coudl tell me what is wrong , thanks in advance. Here my character sheet, https://www.dndbeyond.com/profile/Ahriman87/characters/52908880
A couple of spellcasting class options aside, there's not a lot you can do wrong especially when sticking to first level. You should mark the weapon(s) you're using as active in your inventory though, otherwise attacking with them won't show up as an option under your actions. That aside, I don't think you picked a background. That'll give you some extra proficiencies and a special quality or ability on top of what race and class provide.
Eit: scratch that last bit, you must have since I see 4 skill proficiencies. I assume it's something not shown on the charsheet unless you're the owner or the DM of the campaign the sheet is part of.
Well for the skill proficiencies i've taken 2 skill, 2 languages, but for those languages i didn't choose anything, since i didn't know what to pick, because on the genasi description they say that race can speak common and primordial, but sisnce i didnt found these two languages i didin't take anything, i didn't wanted to make an error. For the Background the custom one, but i have no idea of what to say for now.
Common and primordial are your starting languages. The other 2 languages are extra and can be used to pick up any languages. (Ignan could be cool since you're playing a fire genasi).

ok, but the starting languages aren't noted anywhere, so i was kinda disturbed , also , let me guess ignan is the language of the fire elemental and fire creature ?
Edit: well i've searched for the Ignan languages and it doesn't appear in the possible selection. Also just out of curiosity, if i want to create a half Drow character, should i pick the half elf race and custom it a bit for suiting it or is there aanother method ?
You obviously used Point Buy for scores and have done everything you could to raise your two most important ones; Str and Con. You are going to be utterly crying for Dex later on. You need it all over the place, for saves, for Initiative, for armor class (twice as important for Barbarians, since it adds in to Unarmored Defense) and you even need it to throw the little balls of fire you get from Produce Flame. Then you are going to look at your Str and Con again. Both need points, your Str more than your Con, but you're only one point away from getting that +1 bonus from Con! You want as much Con as you can get! The extra hit points are no big deal, you're 4th level at that point so it's only four more, but Con also adds in to Unarmored Defense. You're going to take a lot of damage at 4th level with an armor class of 13.
You obviously hate "dump scores" as much as I do, but I think you're going to need one. Barbarians are supposed to be imposing and all, and I note that you have Intimidation as a skill, but Charisma isn't all that useful to a Barbarian. I present to you, Sol 2 - D&D Beyond (dndbeyond.com)
I filled in as much as I could. I had to pick the "Outlander" background, which is standard issue for Barbarians, and I took Path of the Beast so you could grow some dragon-ish features when you go into a fight. I left the ability score increases alone. You'll have to figure that out.

Languages known are noted in the bottom left-hand corner of your character sheet.
Ignan is a dialect of Primordial, so you already know it.
Half Elf (Drow variant) comes with the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. If you or someone in your campaign owns the book, it will be an option when you can choose your race.
Just so there is no confusion because this question come up a lot. In order for classes, subclasses, feats, races, etc beyond the Basic Rules to show up in D&D Beyond (DDB) character builder, you must purchase the books on DDB. Having the physical books doesn’t give you access to them here. You can also purchase just subclasses, maybe other things I don’t recall, piecemeal if you don’t want to get the whole book. If you buy the book here later what you already paid comes off the price.
Edit: for example you may be able to buy the half elf drow variant by itself from the Sword Coast Adventurers Guide if you don’t want the whole book. I looked and don’t see it in the marketplace because I already own it. But you should be able to do that if you want.
As mentioned, buying the books here opens options on the character builder. The option is to homebrew the thing you want (race, subclass etc) to mirror the purchased one.
You mentioned in the OP that you were concerned they might be considered stupid. I would suggest if you can present a plausible story for why any race became any class, you should be commended and never ridiculed. Each D&D character is a unique, individual entity. The Orc Wizard is just as viable as the Gnome Barbarian and if your creative juices can put together a tale of who that odd mix came to pass, I am not only accepting, but appreciative of the story you provide. I'd look forward to watching these "odd" combinations play out.
The character you posted will, as stated be wanting Dex pretty bad as soon as viable, but to kick off, I like it. If you'd rather min/max than RP, you could drop Cha and Int to 8 to bring Dex up some. As it stands, unchanged, you could take him out and I have no doubt, have a grand time with him. Enjoy!

OK, thanks for the answers, half drows look better indeed, i also heard about Tasha's Cauldron, i saw a video about it.
well, now i'm goign to get the books and see, thanks again .
