hi, i'm fairly new to dnd and i haven't bought any set anything related to dnd but i do want to play this with my friends so i'm wondering if i can play here online or is this just a big website for reading and interacting with other dnd players?
D&D Beyond can be used to look things up in the books (if you have bought them) and to build a character on your character sheet. If a DM adds those characters to a "campaign," it can be used to look up the characters by the DM. There is a dice rolling feature, so you can use it to roll dice. And there is an encounter builder and combat tracker that sort-of works, but is not fully featured by any stretch.
However, it is not a virtual table top. You cannot use it for maps, for voice communication, or any of that. You will need other apps (such as discord for voice, Foundry/Roll20/Fantasy Grounds/Astral for maps, or some other solution).

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
