Hey folks, I noticed this comment under Proficiencies on the Human race description in the variant section. "You can replace all the proficiencies granted by the Skills trait to another proficiency of your choice." You can find this page here.
This statement is not in the physical book nor the errata. What does it mean?
It implies that you can replace your skill choice with ANYproficiency? How about light armor proficiency? Shield proficiency? Is that what this really means?
You can replace all the proficiencies granted by the Skills trait to another proficiency of your choice
I mean it is awful wording. It could be read to mean that you can replace a whole bunch of skill proficiencies with just one. Which would be... extremely stupid.
I assume what they mean is, any proficiency granted in the proficiency line can be swapped out one-for-one with any other single proficiency. But that's not what the sentence says.

WOTC lies. We know that WOTC lies. WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. We know that WOTC knows that we know that WOTC lies. And still they lie.
Because of the above (a paraphrase from Orwell) I no longer post to the forums -- PM me if you need help or anything.
I think this is just a side-effect of D&D Beyond trying to incorporate all the Tasha's changes in a programmatic way. Anywhere you would gain a proficiency, they added a feature that you could swap it out as per the guidelines in Tasha's.
If you look at Tasha's, there is a Proficiency Swap table that shows what you can trade. For skills, you can just swap for another skill. So as a variant human, you get to choose any skill... and then swap it for any other skill!
Well the WotC position is spelled out clearly in Tasha's like I said. This is an issue of D&D Beyond trying to implement those rules into their system. But maybe they heard you because I don't see it there anymore.
No need for Wizards to clarify it. This is purely a DDB thing, and as Scatterbraind said, it's a byproduct of how they had to implement Tasha's Cauldron content on the website. In order to future-proof their system, they added code that grants the Lineage floating-ASI, floating-proficiency system to all existing species. Even variant human, which neither needs it nor benefits from it.
Effectively, for variant human, you can ignore the line. Variant human could already do what Tasha's Cauldron allows any species to do. Nothing in Tasha's Cauldron impacts variant human at all.

*Everyone's favourite, Rule lawyering time!* Actually, what if you pick a feat (the starting one) that grants you proficiencies?
Then it's the feat granting you those proficiencies, not your species. Tasha's Cauldron allows you to change proficiencies on your species stat block, not the text of any feats you gain. Even if it's your species that lets you gain the feat.

Yeah I dunno. The book says 2 ability scores by 1 and one skill of your choice and one feat.

It's because of the change to the custom lineage system. No, I do not know what it means.

Hmm.. Hopefully someone at WOTC can clarify this.
