Spells which do more when cast with higher level slots say so in the description. For examples, see Fireball for a spell that does more damage when cast with a higher level slot and Fire bolt for a spell which just does more damage when the caster is higher level. Spells which don’t say so in the description do not have more effects at higher levels. Is that what you’re asking about? Does that help?
Sorry for not clarifying. I’m trying to homebrew a spell (3rd level). It would do 5d8 damage at 3rd level. I’m trying to have it go up by 1d8 each level of spell slot above 3rd.

I think FTL is suggesting you make a copy of fireball to see what modifiers are used to do exactly that. Copying things that do what you are trying to do is a great way to learn the tools.
I’m trying to figure out how to add 1d4 onto a spell that normally has 2d8, and change the fixed value for the spell. Can you guys help?
Unfortunately, both of the things you are trying to do are problematic. The system is no good at combining dice types like that, and it cannot change fixed values at higher levels properly.
I’m homebrewing a spell called Extra Arms. I know I might just have to tell how the spell works at higher spell slot levels in the description, but I want to see if there’s any way it could say that it gives you another arm per higher spell slot level. Please help.

Yes. Set the Higher Level Scaling Type to “Spell Scale.” Then on the At Higher Levels form you want to enter 1 as the Scaling Level Value, select “Additional Count” as the Scale Effect, a Fixed Value of 1, and enter “Arms” in the Details.

What is the scaling level value?
For example, what settings would I use to scale the damage to 1 more damage die per level of spell slot?
I’m super confused, sorry if this doesn’t make any sense.
