As the tittle suggest I need help renaming a hombrew race of mine! this was one of the first races I've EVER homebrewed so of course its terrible in terms of design. I wanted to come back to it and fix it up a bit (more like a bunch) and update some of their lore and descriptions. as I was working I realized they needed a name change. originally they were called the "Ayamari Dragons" (Ayamari roughly means error or mistake), this was supposed to show that their progenitors (True dragons) named them that way because they were never meant to exist so they were like a "mistake" or "error" in the universe. I first thought of the name "Dragon kin" but then I felt like that name was super basic. can anyone help me come up with a name that evokes the True Dragons intentions of calling them "mistakes"?
Drake-kin, Wyvern-kin, Other things that refer to cousins of True dragons. If the dragons really think of them as mistakes they wouldn't want anything that has the word dragon in it for them to know. Sort of like pushing off blame for a mistake.

You said it yourself: Ayamari dragons
Why does that need changing? Doesn't that literally come from the true dragons calling them mistakes?

Idk it probably has to do with me thinking my old stuff is really cringe (it is) and I was SUPER obsessed with Japanese stuff around that time so idk I kinda cringe thinking about how I literally chose the word "Ayamari" primarily because it's a Japanese word

I see. I understand now. 😄
I have a suggestion. What if you maintained the original idea to sort of preserve the origin, but change it a bit like Amari Dragons or Ayar Dragons to make it a whole new fantasy language.
The basic concept of "insertword dragon" is really real life-like and believable. I like it. Generally people irl suck at naming things.
There are surprisingly few Hill of Endless Sorrows and surprisingly many "Jack Hills" because Jack was the first to build a house there. If you know what I mean. 😂
So the word being literally "mistake dragon" is IMO great. Best thing is, Amari may sound awesome and epic to people in your world, if it's a forgotten word that people don't know the literal meaning of. It just kinda stuck and nobody bothered to rename them. Maybe it was Ayamari back in the day, but has changed over time and may not hold any linguistic meaning anymore, except the creature it refers to.

Protodragons or protokin could imply they were a "first draft."
Neverkin as is they will never be "true dragons."
Something with the terms echo, replica, tracing, mirror to indicate they are an imperfect copy.
Abberation is a bit of a loaded word in D&D, but could work depending on how much their creators dislike them .Abberakes?
I will often hit up a thesaurus to search words with similar meanings to my "keywords" for a thing and use those words for further inspiration.
My homebrew subclasses (full list here)
(Artificer) Swordmage | Glasswright | (Barbarian) Path of the Savage Embrace
(Bard) College of Dance | (Fighter) Warlord | Cannoneer
(Monk) Way of the Elements | (Ranger) Blade Dancer
(Rogue) DaggerMaster | Inquisitor | (Sorcerer) Riftwalker | Spellfist
(Warlock) The Swarm

I often like to use real world languages to name things
Fehler is German for mistake and could work well

Protodragon sounds really cool! Calling them Echokin also sounds cool! And Neverkin has a ring to it. Might consider that.
