I am working on a magical Scythe. With some potential story-arch/adventure attached to it.
Attributes are as follows: Heavy, Two-handed, Reach, Requires Attunement, 1d10 Slashing
Magical Attributes: 2d4 Psychic Damage, Needs a Spell or other attribute(maybe?).
Cursed:
(details of the curse only revealed after attunement):
The Reaping Scythe absorbs all the souls of the sentient creatures it kills. When it is full the scythe must be taken to a ferry man at the River Styx. Only then can the wielder un-attune from the Scythe. Anyone attuned to this Scythe feels an overwhelming compulsion to complete this task, once the scythe is full.
My plan is to have any player who attunes to the scythe roll a d100 to determine how many souls are already inside the scythe.
Looking for thoughts on whether or not this weapon would look attractive enough for a 5-6 level player to be willing to attune to it knowing it is cursed but not knowing what the curse is. I do not want to make it over powered. But I want to make it attractive enough that one of the party members might try it. My thought is that I need to add a spell or feature, maybe something that uses charges?
What constitutes "full"? It is not clear at what point that would happen.
My only caution is that unless "full" means "whenever the DM tells you it's full," then you have no control over when this player will be strongly encouraged to abandon whatever the party is currently doing to go on a different adventure. This is more of a curse on you and the rest of the party as it is on the player with the scythe, as it's you guys who need to deal with the fallout of this.
If the compulsion is not so demanding that they can wait until they finish out the current quest, then this would be fine. But you still may have an issue if you determine "full" is 120 souls and the player rolls an 8. They may get to level 20 before they kill that many creatures.

That's a great point. Thank you! My plan was to have full be 100 souls. Looks like I need to rethink that a bit.
