The Darkblade is a Warlock Patron for D&D 2024 inspired by the classic fantasy of the Black Sword: a single eternal sentient weapon that has passed through countless champions across history, never truly belonging to any of them.
From the very beginning, my goal wasn't simply to create another martial Warlock. I wanted to build a subclass with its own combat rhythm, centered around resource management, positioning, and meaningful decision-making. The Darkblade rewards players who can recognize the right moment to attack, defend, or prepare for an explosive turn.
At the heart of the subclass is Blade Awakening. While awakened, every successful strike strengthens the bond between wielder and weapon, generating Awakening Charges. These charges are the fuel that powers nearly every aspect of the subclass.
The goal isn't to spend charges as soon as you gain them. Every turn presents a meaningful choice: invest them to increase your damage, recover resources, protect yourself, or continue building toward an even stronger play. The better your positioning and decision-making, the greater your reward.
For that reason, unlike the original 2014 Hexblade, the Darkblade doesn't gain proficiency with Medium Armor or Shields. This was an intentional design decision. Instead of relying on a naturally high Armor Class, your survival depends on how well you manage your Awakening Charges. Features such as Hexguard allow you to convert offensive momentum into protection when necessary, but doing so means sacrificing damage that those same charges could have provided.
That is the Darkblade's true curse.
Every charge spent to survive is a charge that cannot be used to increase your offense. Every charge spent aggressively may leave you without the resources needed to endure the next round. The weapon never allows you to have everything at once. It rewards patience, planning, and good judgment, while punishing greed and poor decisions.
Starting at 6th level, the subclass expands on another core design goal: versatility. With Darkblade Transmutation, your weapon can assume the form of different martial weapons, allowing you to adapt your fighting style to the situation while making meaningful use of magical weapons found throughout a campaign. Rather than locking the character into a single weapon type forever, the Darkblade was designed so that discovering a legendary sword, an ancestral greataxe, or any other magical weapon can remain an exciting moment instead of becoming mechanically inconvenient.
Throughout its design, one principle remained constant: the Darkblade should always feel like a Warlock. Spellcasting is still a fundamental part of the subclass, and many of its strongest turns come from combining weapon attacks, magic, and careful management of your Awakening Charges.

No one possesses a Darkblade. No warrior is its true owner. Each champion is merely the next to be used.
