So I will preface this by saying that I'm taking some ideas from samurai jack because i love that show. So essentially fairly early in the campaign the party finds out about the BBEG and that they have a plan to take over the world, but they have been chosen as the hero's of this millennium or whatnot and are destined to stop the BBEG. And so fairly early on the BBEG is going to send my party hundreds if not thousands of years into the future where he control the whole world and is now either too powerful or since its no longer the party's millennium they no longer have the power to stop the BBEG (part of my plot is that in this future the BBEG has made everyone basically forget about the gods, and so the gods are now either dead or very far away since they no longer have followers) and the rest of the campaign is them trying to get back to the past to stop the BBEG. My idea is for the BBEG to cast an extremely powerful spell to send them into the future. I know I could possibly use Wish but that's kinda boring. So I'm wanting to create of a homebrew spells that can do it. And maybe its something like a 10th level spell (yes I know that the magic weave or the gods or whatever don't let any spell above 9th level happen but that doesn't really stop me this can be a homebrew world where that isn't a thing that happens). But I wanted the first few session to be the BBEG collecting the materials to cast this extremely powerful spell. And the party is basically figuring out the whole prophecy thing about them or maybe they get visited by a god or two who endow them with the power to strike the BBEG down (kinda just like samurai jack too I guess lol). They also find out about the BBEG gathering said materials (maybe a session is them trying to stop some minions from breaking into a vault the kingdom has which holds one of the materials) but they don't know what the BBEG is planning yet.
My question now is what do you guys think would be some components and materials that would be needed to craft and cast this spell? Cause I don't want the BBEG to just innately be able to cast it (I don't want them to just be Aku). And I've had an idea of the party having to gather the materials themselves in an attempt to cast the spell again and that's how they get back to the past. So any thoughts on materials and the like? I'm fairly new to home brewing spells and don't really have the faintest clue what I should use. Thank you!
I think the components should be parts from very powerful monsters. That way it sets up an interesting challenge for them right off the bat... if they want to use the spell themselves, they'll need to seek out these same powerful monsters and gather those same components.
As this is a BBEG spell that you are considering to be at least a 9th level spell, it might be worth not making it into a conventional spell. Both Rise of Tiamat and Out of the Abyss have similarly powerful magical effects, summoning and banishing the queen of dragons and demon lords. This magic is not performed by the players but by NPCs. If the players attempt to perform the spell, they likely need an NPC of great magical knowledge.
In the case of this ritual, things such as, an hourglass made with the sands of the Plane of Earth, gears from Mechanus, the blood of an immortal creature, stone from a sphinx’s lair, would make great material components. Especially if the hourglass is huge.

An object from the time period you wish to access. That will be an easy component for the PCs to get for the trip home, but the question of where the heck the BBEG got such an object from the future in the first place should either be a fun one for them (and you) to solve or some eternal mystery.
