 What I don't understand is why he's there at all.

 Well, he is definitely in the Woodland Realm at the time of the Hobbit. The only reason he isn't in the book is because Tolkien hadn't invented him yet. There is literally no way he wouldn't have been in the Battle of Five Armies or at the Woodland Realm when the dwarves were captured. They couldn't have left him out of the movie, once he was in LOTR.

 For some reason, he's the star of the whole movie. Go look it up, he's got more screen time and moments then anyone except Thorin. I feel like the movie should really be called the Dwarf, the Pro Wrestler, and the Blonde Hottie or something, it's really all about Thorin, Azog, and Legolas. Not much about Bilbo and Smaug, like the book.
