Also, have our Istari thought of any good LOTR encounters? If so, you can run them at any time (if you want to, I'll make a LOTR Encounter thread).
Balrog, the Witch-king is powerful but 1. the Balrog is an angel, not a mortal man, and 2. somewhere in the books (so don't you dare quote me on this) it says the greatest power of the Nazgul is the fear they create. I highly doubt that a BALROG of all creates would be scare of an only 4,000-year-old human in a cloak
As for lotr encounters, have a dungeon based on the golbin caves in the hobbit.
Good point.
What about you?

A balrog is definitely more powerful than a Nazgul, but according to the books, the Witch King was nearly as powerful as Sauron himself, and even the Istari feared him. And the same is said for the Balrogs. I'd have to say they tie. Also, if you'd like to create and DM LOTR encounters, then you can become an Istari.

I ranked the Witch-King at CR 20 (I believe) and Balrogs at CR 23. Most of the Nazgul's attacks are ineffective against a Balrog.

Which elven prince was Bilbo's mithril chain made for? It could have been Legolas, since the wood elves were involved in trade with the dwarves.
In the Silmarillion, a small chain shirt of Mithril and a shortsword were made for Earendil (he's Elrond's dad) shortly before the fall of Gondolin, when he was only a small kid. I don't know how the shirt ended up in Erebor, but I believe it and Sting were the same as the ones made for Earendil, that were lost in the Fall of Gondolin. Quite a coincidence that they both ended up being used by Bilbo! It would make sense that the shortsword came from Gondolin, as it was found in the same place as Orcrist and Glamdring, both of which were lost in the Fall as well. As for the shirt, Mithril was very rare and expensive, so I can only assume there weren't too many little kid/hobbit-sized ones made, so it must be the same as Earendil's!

I love how despite not getting published Tolkien adds in mythology from the Silmarillion. One of my favorite times was when Frodo and Sam were going into Mordor and one of them companies there story to the story of Beren and Luthian. Going back and rereading that part was amazing.

Hi everyone! I'm working up the will to finalize my signature, so... I guess this will be the signature for now
I just realized that since I am an Elf as well as the Valar, I can pick an elf name instead of a Valar one (the elves have way cooler names then the Valar). I'm thinking Thranduil, but can anyone remember any cool elf names? If so, I'll be very grateful (I stink at remembering names).

Can you change my name to Gil-Galad?
Sure! I don’t have my computer available right now, but once I do, I’ll update it immediately.

Although a lot of elves have really cool names, I feel some Valar (Mandos) are cooler than elves, independent of their names. It's not the name but the association to the being that made me choose the angle-wedding, meteorite sword-wielding, high king of the sindar, and lord of Beleriand, Thingol.

What Would Have Happened if Smaug Survived: Thoughts?
Here's mine: Middle Earth go boom.
I’d type it out in more detail, but I don’t have the time, so the above is just a summary.
Likely nothing for many years. We know that Gandalf set Thorin and Company against Smaug in hopes of removing a powerful piece from Sauron’s chessboard. So, while Smaug would not, I think, have brought his ruin further than Lake-town at the time of The Hobbit, he would have come forth in the War of the Ring.
Gandalf says near the end of Lord of the Rings how, if it were not for the valiant offstage fighting of the Elves of Mirkwood, Men of Dale, and Dwarves of Erebor, there might have been “dragon-fire and savage swords in Eriador, night in Rivendell.” This implies that other, weaker dragons were still around and fighting by LotR, but were defeated. Had Smaug survived, without Bard and his Black Arrow, and (in the book) Bilbo’s intervention via the thrush, who would not have known of Smaug’s weak spot without Bilbo’s flattery, things would certainly have gone differently. Dragons would have swept across Middle-Earth, and Gandalf’s words would have come to pass.
