Gotta love “news” sites that post a nine day old story as if it were a brand new development!
That said, it was nice to hear that a number of actual Tolkien experts found it enjoyable and with an appropriate tone. I couldn’t survive another Hobbit fiasco.
Dunno what you’ve been watching, but the trailer has got 3 million dislikes to a couple hundred thousand likes, and is the most rejected thing in the history of the Tolkien fandom. Makes the Hobbit look absolutely incredible and faithful to the original, based on the fact there was the tiniest iota of the original in it.
A LOT of those dislikes are from overt racists who do not like that they are casting people or color in the show. A secondary and slightly smaller batch of those are sexists who dislike that there are going to be female leads.
I am disinclined to give either group much weight. Not do I consider either group part of the fandom.
Oh, those idiots. They’re jerks, I’m more in the smaller group of people who just don’t like it cause Amazon have ripped every bit of lore they have to shreds and redone all the characters. I thought you couldn’t stand the Hobbit cause it deviates from the source material? At least there’s some of the original in it, which is more then can be said for RoP.
Seriously. Every character we have seen bares no resemblance whatsoever to the original. All the lore has been changed or mutilated. There isn’t the tiniest piece of anything Tolkien in it besides the names. Like I said, it makes the Hobbit look like a masterpiece.
As for the black elf and stuff: That’s really cool. I’m annoyed cause the elf looks like your stereotypical (and therefore racist) 21st century “black guy” as opposed to an elf, right down to the haircut, cutoff sleeves, and lack of the typical elvish slender and nimble physique. The black dwarf is cool, tho the lack of bears is also annoying. It’s only the way they’ve done the elf that I don’t like, as it’s actually incredibly racist.
So you agree that the dislikes don't reflect a dislike of the show due to lore reason, but racist reasons?
SOME of the dislikes. I sincerely doubt three million people happen to hate the show just cause they’re racist.
Huh. You’re reading an awful lot into a minute or so long trailer. Let’s look at some facts:
Fact: Amazon did not have the rights to most of the lore when they started the show, so they were specifically designing large swaths of the show around holes in Tolkien’s timeline, specifically so they did not tread on the lore and get into legal trouble.
Fact: The Tolkien estate put conditions on what changes Amazon could make to the lore. We don’t really know how extensive those changes are, but the Tolkien estate has been historically protective of their IP (which is why they justifiably hated the Hobbit). Their restrictions are described as “brutal.”
Everyone claiming that the show is going to “ruin” the lore based off the trailer is doing so based on nothing more than speculation - speculation that is contradicted by the scant facts we do have.

Fact: Galadriel is confirmed to bear no resemblance to her original character.
Fact: Elrond has been changed drastically.
Fact: All the lore we’ve seen has been entirely made up and bears no resemblance to the original. We assume they’re gonna show the best bits in the trailer? And not the bottom of the barrel? Cause the only reason it will be fine is if the last is true.
1. Save for her name, apperience, history, and more
2. Fact: Elrond hasn't been changed 'drastically', since drastically is a self defined term
3. They have changed all the lore, except for the names, numenor, sauron, map, etc

You’re right - she has pointy ears, which are never mentioned in the books. Clearly ruining her character /s.
We have literally seen nothing about the direction the show is taking with these characters other than the basest of hints. We have a Vanity Fair article and a couple seconds of trailer; that’s simply not enough data to extrapolate any kind of meaningful prediction of what the show might be.
Now, is it possible they’ll mess up the lore - perhaps, and then I shall unleash the same level of scorn which I heap upon the Hobbit films. But for now? Speculation is silly, and the more information we obtain about the show, particularly information coming out of the Tolkien estate and actual scholars of Tolkien who experienced the show, the more inclined I am to feel cautious optimism.
Speculation on incomplete—and purposefully vague for the purposes of building hype—data is just silly.

And as we all know, the most crucial lore in Tolkien's lore isn't the Valar, isn't the shape of the world, isn't the Christian values that permeate the work, but instead it is that dwarves have beards

That article stated that she’s brash, violent, COMMANDER OF THE NORTHERN ARMIES, and generally most definitely not what she was in the Second Age! Elrond is an architect who is on holiday in Moria! Numenor CAPTURE Galadriel instead of honouring her! Plus a bunch of other things (Galadriel’s mission, stupid pre-hobbits are in it, and whatever is up with that mom and kid with a broken sword).
That already is nearly as much as the Hobbit movies, out of a single to the trailer!

Canon... Yes and no. Unfinished Tales includes drafts and other elements of Tolkien's writings that did not make it into the final version of the Silmarillion (recall that Tolkien did not finalize the Silmarillion, his son was the editor who put the finishing touches on what did or did not get included). The Unfinished Tales include a lot of background information that did not fit into the narrative, stories of folks from periods of time that are not covered by the Silmarillion (such as Galadriel's days in the Second Age as a military leader).
I also recommend not taking things as an insult so freely; there simply is no other logical conclusion to your continued insistence that "Amazon--who has a team of Tolkien experts including the Tolkien family--is getting the lore wrong." Your position inherently relies upon you--not Tolkien's estate--being the gatekeeper of what is or is not "canon", and thus should be considered a rather untenable argument.
You know, it's fairly clear that this conversation is mired in the doldrums, so I propose we make like CĂrdan and tack this conversation hard to to starboard.
Who introduced you all to the Lord of the Rings? For myself, it was my father, who himself loved the novels when he was younger.

Ok. I’m wrong on that front, I’ll admit it. I don’t like the show, but I don’t want another rehash of the Discord server argument so I’ll shut up.
No, I’m not saying what’s canon: I’m going off what the community is saying, and evidently the community needs to do some homework. Also, the Tolkien experts left the show cause “creative differences”; AKA, Amazon is not following the lore.

My Grandfather. He has an entire library in his house. He got me my amazing copies. He has this ability to find the best possible versions of every book. It took me a while to get into the books but when I did I called him and we talked for hours. We’re actually going up to see him and my grandma next weekend

My grandma gave me The Hobbit. But I found LOTR and the Silmarillion on my own.

For me, it was… No one in particular. My family were all fans and recommended it, but no one pushed me to really read it.

My Grandfather. He has an entire library in his house. He got me my amazing copies. He has this ability to find the best possible versions of every book. It took me a while to get into the books but when I did I called him and we talked for hours. We’re actually going up to see him and my grandma next weekend

He got me a 3 volume hardcover set, I think it’s an anniversary edition, all three have fold out maps in the back which are illustrated by Tolkien
