Say what you will about the Hobbit films but the scene at the end of The Desolation of Smaug with all the gold is so stunning visually omg. (Also Smaug would've been so pretty if he'd somehow kept the gold on him)
Also even though Tauriel is pretty awesome, having her and Legolas show up to save Fili + gang from the Orcs in Laketown kind of took away from them being the heroes.

Yup, I’m a big fan of the Hobbit films either. Lots of the criticism comes from people who have only watched the theatrical editions, which feel more like a generic fantasy movie then anything Middle Earth. The extended editions fix all of that. The other big criticism is that it’s not true to the lore, which is hilarious. It’s not true to the BOOK, you mean. Nearly every “change” in the Hobbit movies were actually written by Tolkien in works like the Unfinished Tales and appendices of LotR.
The Dol Guldur Necromancer plot? Tolkien wrote it, tho the history of the Nazgûl is compressed into something digestible lol. A few things are understandably tweaked and the timeline is somewhat compressed, but you can say that about half of the LotR movies. I never have issues with tweaks and compression of the massive timeline of Tolkien’s lore. The only change in this is that the Necromancer sends the Battle of the Five Armies. And Azog would have done that anyway even without the Necromancer, so you kinda forget that. Most of the tweaks in this plot are so that the Nazgûl’s rebirth coincides with the Necromancer, which gives us a reason for him to actually be called the Necromancer lol.
Azog? He’s the biggest lore change. And his only change is that he’s alive in the movie! His actual character and plot is completely Tolkien.
Legolas and Tauriel and cool, and Tauriel’s inclusion doesn’t break canon. Her romance plot with Kili does make me want to gouge my eyes out, tho. And they just kinda meander around and kill orcs until the Battle. Feels like PJ really didn’t know what to do with them and just wanted more Legolas cause he’s the fan favourite. Their plot is one of the biggest lore changes, but it’s so low-level it affects literally nothing at all. So I’ve got no problem with it.
Obviously the ending of the 2nd movie’s action scene is totally made up and really accomplishes nothing, but that’s a pro: You can just skip to it and it’s basically the same as the book. I do agree that it has some cool visuals tho, even if gold doesn’t work like that lol.
There’s smaller things like Beorn’s scene getting tweaked to fit the tone of the movie, Mirkwood being tweaked slightly for no apparent reason other then to make the dwarves look slightly less idiotic (very slightly), and (the best change of the movie IMO) Laketown getting some actual screen time to make us care about it and Bard. The importance of the Arkenstone is a subtle change, but a good one. It gives the quest a concrete goal. And an actual reason for needing a burglar! Seriously, read the book. Nowhere is it mentioned WHY Bilbo is needed as a burglar. The book had some massive holes in it and a lot of the movies changes are trying to fix them.
Sorry for the huge post lol, defending the Hobbit it is one of my favourite preoccupations. My main point is, anyone who says the movies aren’t Tolkien needs to read more Tolkien. Most of the tweaks are simply to fix the book’s massive plot holes.
In a more direct reply, yeah I agree the ending has some cool visuals. It still doesn’t make sense and accomplished nothing, but it does look cool lol. And yeah Tauriel is cool. Too bad her romance plot isn’t…
Now, I wouldn’t assume. I’ve got reason to believe to believe that members of this cult I mean club are in fact dragons. And sentient rickrolls. Anyway, greetings!
Lego is back! Finally bro. I tried to keep this place alive a little until you got back but now that you are I'll probably start posting some more.
Thanks a ton! Top marks on the Maia service report to Gradius.
Happy to help. This thing isn't dying until we are.
I’m having vivid mental images of us still checking on here every month or so when we’re 40 lol. New title goal, since we’ve got the most posts in club and biggest clubs titles: LONGEST STANDING CLUB!

it feels cool to be a part of this. Just saying.
Simple question to everyone, what about LotR makes it so good to you? What aspects appeal to you about this masterpiece specifically? I'm just wondering other people's perspectives after being one of the longest members here.

Like Legolas said, Middle Earth. Tolkien made it a place. I don't think the story or the characters are the major focus, they are parts that deserve attention, but, as I have said before, Tolkien was writing a mythology for England. So that is what it is, a mythology. Mythologies read differently than stories. His work has provided a deep world full of myths and legends that feel like you are reading something similar to the Volsung Saga, Beowulf, or Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. When reading something like Beren and Luthien, you get multiple versions of the same story. Similar to when you read about Sigurd and Fafnir. Also, you will find common themes throughout mythology and those same themes can be found in Tolkien's work. Going back to Beren and Luthien, that story has elements of Rapunzel.
And the names. The names are brimming with meaning, it is incredible. Again, this makes it even more like mythology. When you read about different myths in legends, practically everything has a name. From the rock that holds the chains in place that bind a monster, to the distant cousin of the hero's sidekick practically every prop and background character is given a name, cementing it in the world.
Well, it’s long, complicated, written entirely in Olde English, and reads more like a nonfiction history book with a few bits of story thrown in. The story is quite GoT reminiscent, it’s certainly what inspired George RR Martin. I personally enjoyed it, but it’s really up to personal opinion.
Has any one here played War of the Ring? It is a LotR board game that is a lot like Risk. It has hundreds of awesome minifigures from all the different peoples. You play with two teams, the evil side and the good side. It is super complicated and takes almost a day to read the rule book, but it is awesome. You can try to re-enact the story in LotR, or you can attempt to choose your own path to victory. It is a fun game of strategy for LotR nerds.
I’ve never tried that one, tho I’ve heard of it. My personal favourite LotR game is the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game. It’s the closest thing to an “official” LotR game out there, in that it’s licensed by the movies, used their logo and everything, and Peter Jackson was involved with its creation. It’s by Games Workshop (the guys who do Warhammer), and it’s basically Warhammer in Middle Earth.
We’ve got a whole massive tavern for it lol, it’s linked in the front page.

30th anniversary edition was a scam and a travesty.
And the "you may not pass card" is so cringe lol.
