Also, it's canon that different creatures are higher or lower on the "Magical Power" list, or whatever you want to call it. Gandalf, as a Wizard, is pretty high on that list. As are the Eagles. Hobbits are incredibly low. So, when a Hobbit puts on the Ring, all it does is make them invisible. But when a Wizard or Eagle puts it on... Well, let's just say it isn't pretty. Also, the higher one is on the Magical Power list, the more temptation they have to put on the Ring. Gandalf can resist it (enough) because, well, he's Gandalf. But the Eagles... That's another story.
I agree. I mean, the BBEG is a freakin' dragon. Can't get much better than that.
I do like Smaug better as a villain then Sauron, but I’m biased: I think dragons are the best thing ever. I like the movie Smaug better then the book Smaug, he seems smarter, fiercer, and more dangerous then the book. The Hobbit movie has a lot of low points but Smaug is a high one. I also like the look of the orcs in the Hobbit movie better then the LOTR movie (except for Azog the Pro-Wrestler) cause they bigger, scarier, and more competent then the LOTR orcs, who are skinny useless guys who never hit anyone and die when the Fellowship sneeze at them.

Sauron is more of an omnipresent threat, while Smaug is personal, so I see your point. I don’t think it’s fair to compare them though: both work well for the story they’re in. It’s like saying the Joker is a better villain than the Nazi Empire: both are evil but they’re apples and oranges.
And yeah, while the Hobbit movies are pretty awful, he is really cool onscreen. (As a side note, how is it that the LotR movies look more realistic than the Hobbit ones? Everything is way too CGI in Hobbit.)

I think the creatures in the Hobbit look better then LOTR (except for Azog, for some reason) but it is weirdly inconsistent when it comes to backgrounds/structures. Like, Dol Guldur looks like it’s real, while Radagast in the Greenwood in the first move looks REALLY CGI. Also, BTW, I wasn’t trying to compare Smaug and Sauron, I was just saying I like Smaug better because I love dragons.
Istari, do any of you have encounters ready? It's been about two weeks since we had a LOTR encounter, and I thought it'd be nice to try another. I'm gonna set up a PBP thread for all LOTR encounters, so no one on the cult has to deal with the notif flood. It's easy to do an encounter, just post on the cult saying "hey, anyone want to do this?" and then run it on the PBP thread. I've thought up some basic rules for our encounters, that can be changed by the DM of a specific encounter if they wish (if you want to, post it in the post when you're asking for players). Here they are:
Characters levels 1-4 only. Any higher and it takes longer to type your Extra Attacks, big spells, etc. Simpler character means you can spend less time typing and more time focusing on the story.
Generally, its good to have 1-3 players per encounter. I've played with large groups and it takes hours to get through even a round of combat. If there is more people wanting to play, the DM can hopefully run the encounter twice (maybe on the same day, maybe the next day or even week).

Hello, anyone? This good? bad? Thauralen, Variks, Gradius? Do any of you have an encounter ready/almost ready to run?

I was thinking about a battle for helm's deep encounter, I need to run over the scene a couple times to know the dialogue but I'll let you know when I'm ready!

Sounds good to me. I have an encounter I could run, but it'd need to be changed up a bit, and I'm already planning to use it somewhere else first. I'd run it as soon as I finish running it there.
It might be better to make a Discord server for encounters, even if you don’t plan on voice chat, so you don’t need to constantly reload for messages. If we did that I’d think about running a one shot somewhere down the line (no promises of course, I live a busy life).

Super! Since you have a LOTR encounter you want to run, you'll be given the title of Istari (Creator and DM of LOTR Encounters) in addition to the one you already have.

We'll have to put that one up for a community vote.
What if the eagles had carried Frodo to Mordor from Rivendell?
I have a weird sense of humor.
I also make maps.(That's a link)
Sauron would have spotted them immediately and taken care of them (probably using the Nazgul). Stealth was the only real approach to Mordor. And of course, that just assumes that everyone would agree to such a plan, and Frodo was willing to cast the Ring away.

Is it just me, or is the order of the posts all messed up? Because some more recent posts seem to be above earlier ones.

That was possibly Gandalf's plan, taking them up the High Fells of Rudhar. But it failed, so they went the long route.
