Storytellers! I return once more from the grim and oft-feared place known as “writing deadlines” to bring you a game!
Icarus is a wonderful roleplaying game about the fall out a great society! I highly recommend, particularly to GMs who wish to have a fun and interactive way to design great civilizations that fell for the histories of their campaigns. That’s right! Icarus is not only a game in its own right, but a great way to design the past of your own D&D games!
What old D&D mechanic do you wish you could have in 5e? Or, if you feel a bit more creative, what mechanic do you want to steal from another rpg for not just your D&D games, but as a new core rule for D&D?
Personally, I want to bring back prestige classes. But, if that feels more like a character option than a mechanic, I want to see the equipment traits mechanic from Pathfinder 2e.
nice! I'm a big fan, and I'm trying to figure out one of their old discontinued rpgs.
I am not sure if you use Discord - but I am pretty sure the DM that I played with - used the folks on Discord for some good information.
i do actually. check my profile
Even in your extended profile, I don't see a reference to discord... I see your favorite D&D Beyonders, some metal quotes from lyrics, some images... But not discord? Unless I zipped right by it?

I'll be honest, I was never really interested in 40k, and nowadays I'm doubly offput by the growing sub-community of neo-Nazis that don't seem to appreciate that the empire of man is a cautionary tale rather than an aspirational one.

yyyyyyyyeah... I just like the lore...
No doubt. I certainly am not accusing you.
Wait was 40k the universe in which orcs make machines work by believing they ought to? That's hilarious.
I've never played either of the Warhammer games, but I know a bit of the lore. Like Gnomarchy, the Nazi subset of the fanbase is part of the reason why I haven't delved deeper (the monetary cost and artistic skills required to play being the other major roadblocks). My favorite factions are the Adeptus Mechanicus and Necrons. I guess I just like transhumanism.

"............anybody got any potatoes? We could drop a potato in each hole an' see which ones get viciously mauled by horrible monsters?"
question for the day: who here is a fan of the Warhammer 40k universe?
Guilty. I got into 40k way back in high school during the mid-late ‘90s. (Yes, I’m legit old enough to at least vaguely remember when people actually thought rolling up the sleeves on your sport jacket was cool, when a cell phone was the size of a brick and almost as heavy, and when people walked around with boomboxes*👇 on their shoulders.) I saw it at, I think maybe GenCon when it came to or near Philly one year, or some nerd con at any rate. I thought it was AMAZEBALLS!! I dabbled a bit and then mostly fell out of it because I realized that girls and pot were muuuuch better investments of both my time and money. I got back into it around six or seven years ago, but I never got into the tournament scene or anything, jus played with friends. Then they lost me again when 9th edition came out. I missed my templates and vehicle facings, without them it just stopped being the same game to me anymore. I still love the lore though. Too effing cool.

For the kids out there, a boombox was a thing people used to play music back in the day. It was a heavy, boxlike device about 2 ½ ft. long, by about 1 ft. tall and almost as deep. It had two big round things on the front called “speakers” where the sound came out, and in the middle was a tiny little screen that you couldn’t use by touching it, you had to use buttons and knobs instead, and it wasn’t in color and it didn’t connect to the internet either because most people didn’t know what that was yet.It did connect to something called “radio,” which was kinda like streaming, but you couldn’t pick your songs. Instead other people picked the songs and if you wanted to listen to something different you had to flip through different stations (streams) and hope someone was playing something you liked. Below that screen with the knobs next to it was a little door you could open and insert a tiny cartridge a little smaller than a small cell phone is now. Those tiny cartridges had the music inside of them stored on itty bitty little magnetic ribbons, but thy could only hold about a couple dozen songs on them at most, so people needed lots and lots of them to hold all their favorite songs, and they weren’t free either, we had to actually go to physical stores and buy them with money. (Money is the same stuff you use ***** to give to people, only made of green paper.)
It's because they want to murder your characters.
Because 2e is extremely lethal. While I grew up playing 2e, I much prefer, both as DM and player, 5e.
Because 2e, while fun (and lethal) is overly complicated.
For example, a Fighter might need to roll an 11 to hit a monster, but a Rogue has to roll a 14, and the Wizard an 18.
Because they all have different "to hit" dynamics.
And that's just the beginning.
You don't want AC 10.
You want, one day, to be OP and have AC -10.
It's a silly place.
Played in in the pen and paper - not to say I am not a fan - but truly not familiar.
I just played it for a few months because the DM of that game was a player in mine, so I was willing to give it a try.
