Never let your players see you sweat. If your players go off the rails, maintain your cool and be like, "Yeah that was part of the plan all along."
I disagree! Making the DM scramble to fix things is one of the sublime joys of being a player!
Ah yes, he's saying as a DM never let your players know you're sweating. And always play it cool. :D
As a player yes it can be fun!
You'd be depriving them of the reaction they crave. (Obviously this isn't correct for every table, but my tables really enjoy it.) The trick is to find the line where you can convincingly portray that you're trying your best to keep it together but failing. Whether that's true or not is secondary, kinda.

I think the one down side of a DM who is trying to hold it together and failing is it can cause pauses in the game - as they struggle to readjust to what you have changed on them - if they're suddenly flipping through the Monster Manual for a monster they hadn't planned or whatever. Mind you, my players do it to me all the time - and that is one of the benefits that the three games I now run are all remote (were all in person prior to COVID - but when we continued with Discord + D&D Beyond + Beyond20 it just became easier - especially for players with kids and such). So when they start veering off the trail it's easy for me to start opening up other tabs as to what I might use without making it obvious that I am scampering. But I've been at this for so long (clearly showing my age with the favorite toys post) - that thankfully, I've learned to shift very quickly (especially after playing with the players for awhile and learning how they think you can kind of anticipate what they might be doing).

As a player and a GM I can truly say that I relish the moment when your players catch you off guard. It shouldn’t happen all the time. But then when it does it feels so good to you and them because they found that one thing you could never have considered!

If your group enjoys this in certain situations, go ahead. I will admit that when I'm a player, the idea of asking the DM "What's that NPC's name?" for no reason in particular appeals to me, just because funny results and laughs can come from the name and the scramble to pick it.
That being said, I think this only works if A) Both the Dungeon Master and players are fine + enjoy this. Also, remaining calm and adjusting to your characters plans really does feel smoother if you don't give the impression that you're scrambling and don't know what to do.

Oh, absolutely. There've been things that my players have said or done that I've just rolled with. One situation was they were in a pyramid - and the player who was controlling the Artificer asked about the walls - and I described Egyptian like runes all over the wall. And he said, "I press the golden ship rune." I had made no mention of any golden runes, or any that looked like a ship - but the players knew somewhere in this pyramid was a Spelljammer. So I rolled with it and started talking about how all these runes lit up - and blue lights connected - and further down a secret passage opened up. (Originally they were gonna have to solve an easy riddle that dealt with the runes, but this was just a fun way to roll with something the player said). Another time, in my world (I think I mentioned it in this or the original thread) - I have a custom monster that roams this specific desert called "Sand Sharks" - they're like sharks, but they swim in sand as easily as normal sharks swim in water - but they're very deadly because they almost always have cover, unless they breech to attack. Well, one of the things is if someone is bleeding and the blood drips on the sand - the sand sharks can smell it the same way sharks can in water. Well, the party was fighting another set of homebrew monsters - Sand Giants (based off of Sand Giants from EverQuest if anyone has ever played) - and sand sharks came and one devoured one of the slain sand giants - and one of the players was like, "Their gullet is like the tardis." And right then, I said, "Yes, because Bag of Holdings are made from these sand shark gullets." Suddenly the party became interested in slaying these sand sharks to harvest their gullets.
But one of my favorite times, is the cleric (this is for the game that's currently on hold after the pandemic) got a vision from an angel about saving a Dryad in these nearby woods before these cultists complete the ritual and release the demon trapped in the wood that the Dryad guards. The party was on their way - did a random encounter with brigands. They defeat the brigands. The barbarian asks if one of them has a map to their base. I said, "They'd know the way back to their own base. But if you roll a Natural 20, yes, there's a new guy who had to draw a map for himself." He rolled a natural 20. So the party decides to go to the bandit fort - now I have ZERO idea of a bandit fort - they were supposed to be a random encounter. I assumed they'd go after the rescue the dryad. But they say "If we go to the bandit for we can get the gold, go back to the city, buy horses and ride to the dryad." So that's what they do - head for the bandit fort - which I make up on the spot as being this "hobbit hole" type setting; where the fort is embedded in the hill - the party fights some bandits guarding their camp - they beat the boss who has a cursed blade. They find a treasure chest they can't get into. Cleric picks up the cursed blade. Now gets cursed. Sees a vision of herself cutting the sun in half. Party takes the gold they can - walk back to town - buy horses. Rest, because they got beat up. Ride into the woods to save the dryad and see the woods are dying - get to where the dryad is supposed to be and the massive tree is splintered open. Centaurs show up and explain the dryad was slain and the demon was released.
They were like, "We effed up." But it became the main story line of tracking down this demon/fallen angel - that ironically, was spreading pestilence as he moved to the west.
The party was hot on his trail, when the pandemic hit.
If your group enjoys this in certain situations, go ahead. I will admit that when I'm a player, the idea of asking the DM "What's that NPC's name?" for no reason in particular appeals to me, just because funny results and laughs can come from the name and the scramble to pick it.

Absolutely. What matters is everyone is having fun.
And the "What's the NPC's name?" was something my player Jessica (the one I've dragged to all of my games) always did to me. So now my note book has notes - with the names of the NPCs I create. Because there was an ongoing joke that in my off week (the super RP, some fun) game - that the island had a Spanish influence because all the female NPCs always had names that ended with the letter "a" to dictate they were feminine (which may be true, as I am half Spanish myself, lol).
Regarding the monster question it's hard for to keep all the source material separate. I like dragons of all types. I like shadow beings whether they are fey or undead. I also find really freaky looking monstrosities appealing because they scare my players.
Followup question: What are your favorite toys from childhood - mine are LEGOs, Micromen, Battlestar Galactica action figures, and...some chemistry set my parents got.
I think the toys I enjoyed the most were GI Joes, LEGOs, and little dinosaur figurines. I also liked books, though I don't think they count as toys.
hahahah! Just to keep it straight - threw it into a OneNote... so I can see what I've done with what characters and keep things straight, since I have zero idea where I am headed with this - and this way I can try to keep my continuity straight. :D
Question: This applies whether you're play a character or a Dungeon Master - are there any stories (character story, or a story the DM weaved together) that you really enjoyed? What was it? What made it memorable?

I had one character who was searching for his father who had mysteriously disappeared. The DM left clues and traces of my father throughout the campaign. I think I have already explained the backstory so I won't put you through it again. I really enjoyed this because it was fun to find the clues and stuff left behind. I knew that he had a story planned out and I couldn't wait to find out what had happened to my father, where did he go, and why did he leave? Unfortunately, the campaign informally ended before we could finish it so I will never discover what had actually happened. He was one of my favorite characters to play and was also my first character to actually have a backstory.

Figured I might as well go out - and began creating a map for the story. The main continent is called Kreatyve. Because it's so... creative. Man. I slay myself.
The party's adventure begins in the south east in Freehold, leaving from there, on that path into the woods, and into the mountains. Put down a few places I already established in this silly story and added a few more just to fill a little of the map. The map will continue to update as I add things to it story wise.
Ah yes, he's saying as a DM never let your players know you're sweating. And always play it cool. :D
As a player yes it can be fun!

The party's adventure begins in the south east in Freehold, leaving from there, on that path into the woods, and into the mountains. Put down a few places I already established in this silly story and added a few more just to fill a little of the map. The map will continue to update as I add things to it story wise.
