Question of the Day: What sort of competitions would you like to see on DDB?
Games or competitions! Think about the Competition of the Finest ‘Brews or other challenges in the other forums! We’ll vote on options and I’ll create the challenge! Go wild!
I think a competition version of Three-Sentence Backstory could be fun. I wouldn't want the whole thread to turn into a competition, though. I figure there are three forms a competition version could take:
Everybody makes backstories based on a single theme
Everybody makes backstories based on a single structure
Everybody comes up with their own ways of condensing a 3-5 paragraph backstory into 3 sentences (my personal favorite)
I quite like this. Unless another idea appears before the end of the day, I’ll create a thread for this tomorrow!
QotD: Is there a band/song that you can listen to on constant repeat?
Volbeat. Their music also serves as amazing material to inspire my writing. The same goes for the massive force of instrumental music I have and the song “Too Much to Think” by 311.
Another QotD: Have you ever run or been in Halloween themed adventures (near or on Halloween)? Have you, or your DM, ever done anything different to mark "Halloween" in your game(s)?
Another QotD: Have you ever run or been in Halloween themed adventures (near or on Halloween)? Have you, or your DM, ever done anything different to mark "Halloween" in your game(s)?
Sure, we do a special Halloween one-shot every year. We’re doing this years this coming Wednesday night.

Slightly tangential but I'd say still somewhat relevant: at one table I've played at, Friday the 13th means that every roll is made with disadvantage. Nothing really Halloween-y.

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.

Another QotD: Have you ever run or been in Halloween themed adventures (near or on Halloween)? Have you, or your DM, ever done anything different to mark "Halloween" in your game(s)?
I wish we did but we meet so sporadically that we haven't had a game around the time.
Another QotD: Have you ever run or been in Halloween themed adventures (near or on Halloween)? Have you, or your DM, ever done anything different to mark "Halloween" in your game(s)?
Nope. I haven’t been playing D&D long enough to answer most questions about how our games are run (I’ve only done 10 irl sessions overall.) and I’m not a fan of Halloween overall. I strongly dislike horror content, and It isn’t safe to trick or treat nowadays.
QotD: Do you celebrate Halloween? If so, do you decorate the yard? Do you dress up? If you do dress up, what have you dressed up as in the past? What do you plan on dressing up as this year?
Yes, my family invites friends and family over to our house each year for Halloween. We don't decorate other than pumpkins but all the kids can go trick or treating around the neighborhood. Halloween is the only day of the year where I'm allowed to wear costumes in public so I definitely dress up. Last year I dressed up as an Arms Dealer, I pinned a bunch of baby doll arms to the inside of a trench coat and dealt in the illicit trade of arms. This year I am hoping to dress up as the Woodsman from Over the Garden Wall but I need to find a good jacket and time is running out.
This is my 1000th post on DDB! (DDB doesn’t count forum games for some reason)
I’m loving the community that I have found here, and being here is making me a lot happier overall. I’ve found quite a few new friends on here and I’m glad that they are all so welcoming, nice, and wholesome. (^w^)

Only once, I was in a murder mystery campaign that took place in October, so there were some Halloween themes, and I played a warforged reskinned as an animated scarecrow

If not a fan of horror, have you encountered any undead in your D&D sessions? Zombies? Skeletons? Ghouls? Because I feel like they'd be considered "horror content."
And Halloween stuff doesn't even have to be horror content. Just something different to mark Halloween. For example, every game during October in my campaign suffers what's known as "The Hollowing" - where the veil between life and death is at its weakest (so yes, horror stuff can happen) - but the big effect is Magic. During this time where the veil is weak it potentially disrupts magic in strange ways. So each time someone casts a spell - they first need to roll a d100. And I have a chart I create every year with new effects on it - and sometimes the spell goes off fine - but an odd side effect happens.
You can only have one effect on you at a time. So for example, if one turn you turn into a fire elemental, the next turn you cast a spell and you grow a third leg - the fire elemental ceases to exist and you revert to yourself having grown a third leg.
For example - for this year...
#1
You suffer from heart burn… that is, right up until you turn into a Fire Elemental for 2 rounds, dealing an extra 2d8 Fire Damage on ANY kind of attack. The spell however, fails this round.
#2
You feel very emotional - like you're going to cry! Right up until you turn into Water Elemental for 2 rounds, dealing an extra 2d8 bludgeoning damage to ANY kind of attack. The spell however, fails this round.
#3
You feel like you are about to scream - right up until you turn into an Air Elemental for 2 rounds, dealing an extra 2d8 bludgeoning damage on ANY kind of attack. The spell however, fails this round.
#4
You feel like you've really toughed up - literally! - as your skin turns to stone and you become an Earth Elemental for 2 rounds dealing an extra 2d8 bludgeoning damage to ANY kind of attack. The spell however fails this round.
#5
Whoops! That spell misfired - but um - turned a Random Player Invisible for 2 rounds! The invisibility doesn't break if an attack is made. Too bad they can't see themselves so attacks are at disadvantage!
#6
Whatever spell you were TRYING to cast - comes out in the form of water - and does the same amount of damage - except the damage is bludgeoning damage! If it was already bludgeoning damage! It's now double damage! 1 Round.
#7
Your true feeling revealed? The spell misfires and casts SILENCE on a Random Player for 2 rounds!
#8
Your spell goes off successfully! Phew. But right after it does, you're over come with fear and bolt in a random direction using your movement (1=North, 2=South, 3=West, 4=East) for 1 round
#9
Your spell fails to go off - but it's had a different effect! Any spell that targets you automatically fails and hits the caster instead! No savings throw, they automatically fail! This lasts 1 round.
#10
Your spell fails to go off - but it's had a different effect! Any melee/ranged non spell attack against you is automatically redirected at the attack and hits them if their attack would have hit you! This lasts 1 round.
And some other effects from this year...
#36
You magically heal to full!
#37
You magically heal 10 points!
#38
You magically heal one of your companions (randomly selected) for 10 points!
#39
You turn into a Spirit! Melee attacks don't work against you unless magical! Spells, however, still work against you. Your touch does 2d8 Necrotic damage. This lasts 2 rounds.
#40
Bodily gas! You can't control your gas! Stinking Cloud centers on you, but you are immune to its damage - anyone within 20' of you takes 3d6 psychic damage. This lasts 3 rounds.
#41
You polymorph into a sheep for 1 round.
#42
Species shift! Your body changes! 1 = Elf, 2 = Human, 3 = Gnome, 4 = Goblin, 5 = Dwarf, 6 = Halfling, 7 = Aasimar, 8 = Tiefling. This lasts for 2d4 rounds.
#43
You magically recover all spell slots!
#44
You turn into a Vampire! You can bite (Unarmed Strike) someone for 3d6 Necrotic damage. The damage you deal HEALS you! Holy Water does x2 damage against you! This lasts for 2 rounds.
#45
Fireball centered on you - everyone within 60' of you must make a DC 13 Dexterity Check or take 3d10 fire damage. Successful save with half the damage.
I’ve used skeletons in my game and I’ve made some homebrew to make skeleton versions of certain animals. The monsters in the MM don’t bother me, but if they make a horror type game with them I’m out.
I’m don’t think Halloween is horror but there is a lot of horror stuff that is released and spread around in October. I really don’t like playing/seeing horror stuff since It reminds me of some of the stuff that has scarred me in the past. I don’t want to talk about the content I’ve seen that did that.
All I’m going to say about the stuff that has scarred me is that it was videos I found when I was ten. It was about people suffering at the hands of terrorists, and it was horrifying.
That is a cool magical feature you made but I don’t do Halloween stuff irl or in game at all anymore.
Another QotD: Have you ever run or been in Halloween themed adventures (near or on Halloween)? Have you, or your DM, ever done anything different to mark "Halloween" in your game(s)?
I’ve tried to get my group to just about every Halloween since we started playing, but we’ve always had a schedule complication at the last minute that prevented us from playing. This year I’m really trying to do one, but it will probably happen after Halloween. It will actually be a Pathfinder game, just a little horror-comedy one-shot that I came up with when reading through the Pathfinder Bestiary 3. The moment I saw little turtles that yanked people into the water, drowned them, and ripped them to shreds, I knew I had a game on my hands. It draws heavily on Japanese mythology, and a lot of the monsters I’m using are reminiscent of that.

We do a Ravenloft-themed adventure on Halloween. Sometimes it’s tied into the main campaign, and sometimes it isn’t.
I really like D&D, especially Ravenloft, Exandria and the Upside Down from Stranger Things. My pronouns are she/they (genderfae).
Huh, I don't really do anything unusual related to D&D for Halloween, lol.
BoringBard's long and tedious posts somehow manage to enrapture audiences. How? Because he used Charm Person, the #1 bard spell!

Most swing songs, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Cosmo Sheldrake. I don't like to listen to one song on repeat very often because then it gets old.
