I know the thread has moved a bit on at this point, but on the topic of Tolkien: I also found The Hobbit, and later Lord of the Rings, to not really be my style. The books were slow and the plot kept stalling to focus on elements of stories that aren't really interesting to me. The archaic language didn't help either.
It's not that I think Tolkien is a bad author or anything, I don't really regret reading his works. It's just that I think the books aren't really my style and the slow pace doesn't always really appeal to everyone.

Lord of the Rings - I get when people feel that it slows and the plot stalls, because Tolkien veers into a lot of detail. But The Hobbit was very straight forward to me.
But I definitely understand how it's not for everyone. People have different tastes about everything. So I accept that everyone who doesn't like The Hobbit is wrong. (I kid, I kid! LOL) All kidding aside, I truly do understand. Because there are authors out there that people love and I can't get into. "Different strokes for different folks" as they say.
Mental Note: BoringBard dies next in the story....

Personally for me when I got LoTr and the hobbit it 2 years ago I found the hobbit very entertaining and I read through it very fast, I’m still on LoTr, for me it’s hard to read, not in the way that it’s complicated and big words but just I get pretty bored while reading it, it was good while it lasted just it didn’t really get anywhere.

That's what I usually hear. "I enjoyed The Hobbit, couldn't get into Lord of the Rings."
The Hobbit, very much feels like a story that's easier to read. While Lord of the Rings, almost reads like a historical story. Lord of the Rings delves much more into the lore and history of each area, each character, etc., while The Hobbit felt very straight forward story.
Question: Have you ever done in depth research into a subject that you don't usually go into for D&D? If so, what did you study?
I spent 2 weeks studying the Witcher franchise to create a subclass for one of my players. I also spent two weeks studying the history and theories of Alchemy once too.

Yeah, I read The Hobbit as a kid in, like, a couple of days. Ripped right through it. It took me 3 tries to get through LotR, I kept getting lost in Tom Bombadil’s forest. That part was sooo boring. Later in high school, I finally got through it and finished the trilogy, but it took me weeks.

Question: I was looking through the dndmemes subreddit and I kept finding memes saying people are angry that they’re getting rid of Half-races. I just don’t see the problem. Following the logic in the playtests, I can make a child of a Dragonborn and Aasimar. Am I missing something?

Something about them being racist? 🤷

I don’t really understand it a will keep playing with half-orcs and half-elves even if they updates don’t include them. One DND is supposed to be compatible with 5e I think, so they can change it as much as they want and I will still pick and choose which parts I use and which I ignore. If you go to general discussion, there was a thread about this topic that is now locked because it got out of hand. You could go back there and it might explain a bit, but you have to read through a lot of arguing so….

It is never too late to return to a Tolkien conversation. (Or any author really, I love talking about writing)
It did take me awhile to get through LotR, about three or four years actually. Eventually, I pushed through and read the whole series. I think it was hard for me because I started it at too young of an age. However, by the time I got to the third book, it wasn’t really a struggle and I was enjoying it. I want to go back and reread the first two books to better understand them because they are kind of a blur to me.
I personally enjoyed the archaic language and the long descriptions of the scenery. Most people think Bombadil and the ents are the most boring parts, but they were some of my favorites sections in the series. I read through them really quickly because they were exciting for me. But, I do understand that I am fascinated and excited by many things others aren’t interested in. I am hard to bore.
The fact that you said that you admitted that Tolkien isn’t your style makes me happy. I get annoyed when people say that a writer is a bad author just because the book isn’t the type of book they like to read. Folks should strive to appreciate art, even if it isn’t their style. For example, I am not a fan of Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. When I first read it, I couldn’t help thinking that it was awful and I couldn’t wait for it to be over. But, after learning more about the work and thinking about it more, I have learned why it is a classic and realized that it does have value, even if it is not my style. (My main problem with the book is that it doesn’t really have serious consequences. If the main character fails in her “mission” which is to get married, then the consequence is that she will have to get a job. Gasp!)
I don’t know where I am going with this. Sorry for my rambling. I guess I wanted to say thanks for expressing your opinion about a popular writing while not acting as if the book was bad because you didn’t like it.

Since we've ventured onto authors and such - what about comics (or magazines) - have you read any that seem to be close to the idea of D&D?
One such comic (the reason it comes to mind) is a comic I was obsessed with (because it was a lot like D&D without being D&D related) - which was The Adventurers.
The comic was amazing, because it felt like you were reading a D&D campaign turned into a comic. Characters could die. Characters had addictions. It was published by an indie comic company in the 80s, so it was black and white and not bound to things that Marvel and DC had to listen to to ensure they didn't violate any comic code that they were honoring back in the day (which, they've since dropped).
I went and saw the thing. It was a fun experience =)
Have you seen the 80s cartoon?
I went and saw the movie too. It was a fun story, but the inner Realms historian in me was a *bit* angry.
I’ve seen bits of the cartoon and I love it.
Additionally, (and controversially) I enjoyed the 2000 D&D movie. It was enjoyable for me. I could explain my thoughts on it, but honestly, if you don’t like it you don’t like it, and no explanation can change that lol.
They released them in a boxed DVD back in the day - and they had 2nd Edition (or was it 3rd edition?) stats for the weapons the kids have.
I have the episodes on my iPad - and watch through them probably once a month.
Because I love to throw all kinds of references in my games - the Energy Bow that Hank has - has found it's way into my game and is in possession of the party's ranger, which was fitting.
