About 1.5 years ago, I was in a SF group that broke up after two sessions because the GM had work/personal issues.
His schedule is less cluttered now, and he invited me to a game this weekend. So to prepare, I went through the basic book, and did some Google searches on aspects that were not clear (SF is a rules heavy RPG). What I found is that the majority of videos and post regarding SF are dated 2017, with some being dated 2018. I think I found just 2 references made this past year.
Further, only one other person out of 30 he invited indicated that they would attend the game.
So, my question is - In your area, is SF still popular? Do you know of any friends or groups that play the game regularly?
If you tried it, but didn't care for it, what turned you off?
I feel the lack of an answer is because you are asking about a comparative RPG brand on a D&D forum. I feel like you would get a better response on ENWorld.

Given the lack of responses, I have my answer... :)

There's a fair number of people, no where near as prolific as 5e still.
The best place right now for popularity that I have found is the occasional "Industry Reports" that Roll20 puts out.
Most recent one here:

From what I understand (having never played Starfinder), it is reskinned Pathfinder. With all of the benefits and drawbacks that comes with.
5e is by far the most popular (50%) and starfinder, while 8th in the list, is <1% of the campaigns.
My group is trying to get a future / mecha game off the ground, and there really isn't anything published within the last 5 years to help us with it.
We are hoping the Descent into Avernus infernal war machine rules will be useful towards general vehicle design for 5e.
