Does the carpentry mean you will have your home made gaming table?
It means I have had them in the past (and usually given away or had to abandon before moving to a new state as well), but not to the level of extravagance that I have a handful of plans for milling about that are just waiting on a confluence of free time, discretionary budget, and space in the house for the finished product.
Mostly, it is the desire to integrate a sizeable monitor within the surface of the table for the display of digitally painted battlemaps and other visual aids, so that we can still use physical miniatures to get a "best of both worlds" between the tactile and visual, that has continued to delay me. With the monetary costs of needing to buy a decent router to make the project not take a lot longer to make look attractive being a close second.
I've been thinking projector-from-the-ceiling myself. :)
Some of my older plans involved a projector, but then I started noticing a trend of my houses to have a light and/or fan hanging right where I would need to place the projector. That, coupled with the shadows of minis and player's own hands obscuring details that should be visible to the players, and that I don't really know what makes for a good projector but I do know what makes a good TV or monitor, persuaded me to change my plans.
well if you ever manage to do another one I would love to see some photos of how its being done.
Absolutely. Though I'll be honest that I'm more likely than not to copy from designs already out there on the net. Such as this one (hopefully that link works, first time embedding one on this forum), which has most of the things I want out of a table, but I would likely not have it as deep-set in the middle, and would definitely have it be longer so that I could seat at least 8 people including myself since that's what my current table (the wife's antique dinning table) seats and I don't want to feel like I'm "downgrading" anything.
And I'd also probably go far a darker finish like walnut.
My first character was a Dwarven Fighter, whose name is lost to the annals of history, who loved ale and killing things with his axe, and died to an unforseen bodak and a natural 1.
I'm Flannel (this is my actual name), I'm from Mississippi--the Deep South. Been running games for years, but never much was good at playing. I've run almost everything, really, even really obscure RPGs. I'm a presence over on reddit's /r/dndnext and run manysideddice.com (a personal blog that grew way too big with way too much content).
We're doing our own book on Kickstarter! It's going to be amazing--300 pages, art, and so much high quality content you'll be drownin' in it... Click here to check it out and sign-up!
I'm a 39 year old woman living in Wyoming with my husband and (soon to be) 9 month old. I started playing D&D as a child, but never really got into it until adulthood. Sadly, I'm not currently in any games, as our group has slowly moved away. Because of this, my husband and I are working on creating our own world to play in, just ourselves, until we can find another group. And I can't wait until my daughter is old enough to learn to play.
I love Star Wars, Doctor Who, and anything Marvel.
Hello everyone, I'm Couso and currently studying Computational Physics.
Prior to moving to Montana, with my wife for school, I spent a number of years studying various disciplines from theatre and voice acting to welding. Recently I've been trying to rekindle my VO skills by dabbling in Twitch broadcasting, so I'm very curious to see what sort of functionality to expect from that. I have been on the dice for over 15 years; my favorite systems probably being DnD, World of Darkness, and Paranoia. I've also been GMing various systems over the years for almost as long, in-fact my wife and I met when she was invited by a mutual friend to be a player in the 3.5 Campaign that I was running. The campaign ended up going on for a year and a half.
I also have been fantasizing about building a gaming table and would love to help if any of you decide to take on the task!
So now I find the obligatory Introduction thread on this forum! 😊
My name’s David Foxfire and I’ve been a 5Edition player and DM since the playtesting time. Before that, I’ve been a web cartoonist and fiction writer. Unfortunately, I haven’t had any success as either part of the former for over a decade and a half. I was more known on troll sites, burn pages, and Encyclopedia Dramatica than on my own web site. But ever since I became a Dungeon Master, my life turned around for the better. From how I interact with other people to how my own creativity is received, things have been looking up.
I’ve even branched out on creating my own D&D content through what I’m calling the “Public Brainstorming Notebook.” I make too many small items to keep track if I post them individually, so I combine them into one big PDF to send to DriveThruRPG (Pay What You Want, so you can get it for free) so you can read and comment back to me on. My first such notebook is on my Homebrew campaign, Æthercoil, which you can comment on here on the Homebrew forum. (Get the mag here: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse/pub/10063/FoxfireStudios )
My second one will be for my custom version of the Forgotten Realms, and I’d like to have discussions on it here on D&D Beyond, since I am “Making the Realms My Own” after all.
I look forward to hearing from all of you, and home that D&D Beyond is the killer community we all’ve been looking for.
Name is Jon, I am a 26 year-old CS major and Marine Veteran. I spend most of my time either building DM tools for myself, working on my current campaign, or watching Twitch. I also spend a fair amount of time reading Manga. Favorite genre tends to be Slice of Life or Reincarnation, but I'll read anything if the story is interesting.
I am also a huge Star Wars fan! I collect the Power of the Force 1990s re-release figures (the red-card) and have been doing so for the last 2 years. I also have quite the collect of shirts and other various merch.
I started off by watching Rollplay which is a DnD show on twitch.tv. I started watching this group play about 2 years ago and had been looking for a group to play ever since. I finally got fed up with groups dropping before even starting so I bought all the DM books and decided to create my own group! I have been DMing for the past 3 months now with my group meeting about every week. Everyone in our group hadn't played before but I managed to fully corrupt them.
31 year-old Argentine here, currently living and working in the Middle East. Been playing since high school with D&D way back in 3e and worked my way through (including Pathfinder). Been mostly a player but I've recently (last two years) gotten into DMing, and I have to say it's a blast!
Aside from my obvious love for RPGing I also play rugby (when time allows), ski, boardgame a lot, build models and exasperate my saint of a wife with my penchant for puns.
Please see my info below and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask away.
D&D experience (your D&D gaming and version history) – I have been playing D&D since that first Red Box appeared in my local comic store in 1979. I actually purchased it with my paper route money not realizing what it was. I just looked really cool. By the end of day I had read the entire thing including the Keep on the Borderlands that came with it. I rolled up a cleric and sat there all night testing everything out. The very next day I gathered my friends and began our adventure. I have played every edition with my own personal likes and dislikes with each one. I wasn’t a real fan of the 4e version. With over 35 years of the game and it is still my main hobby. I would say my experience level is good. I’ve been creating worlds and destroying them for years. Writing adventures on the fly has always come easy for me. Creating adventure trees so my players don’t’ feel like they are a railroad has been a focus of mine.
Other RPG experience (if any) – This could easily turn into a novel so I’m going to try to condense it a bit. Along with D&D I’ve played a world of board games to the point where I couldn’t list them. For the RPG games I’ll name my favourites. I’ve played a varied bunch of systems with most of them fantasy based and a few awesome Sci-Fi ones.
1.D&D - favourite and number one
2.Runequest – I still own everything.
3.Traveller – awesome game and I’m still waiting for them to redo Firefly. (insert sad face)
4.Warhammer RPG and battle systems.
5.Shadowrun - Epic and replaced Gamma World for us.
6.Star Wars RPG and the new versions as well.
7.Gurps – who doesn’t like gurps LOL!
I'll be turning 50 this year and so far I think I might actually be the oldest player so far. Dang It!
When I’m not traveling through space and time I reside in the MST zone of Alberta Canada.
I run 3-4 groups right now and expanding into the Roll20 world as I learn and grow this new to me system.
AmI normally a DM or Player? About what percentage of each (if you do both)? I haven’t played in years but want to. I’m a DM at heart and always have been. Over the years I’ve played a bit so I’m going to with 95% DM and 4% played and 1% guest as both at the same time. Yeah, figure that one out LOL!
I like a mix of everything. I know some nights people just need to kill something and as a DM I do my best to have something ready so an innocent towns folk doesn’t’ get an axe to the head for nothing. I love the roleplay aspect as a player and DM. I’ve got a few thousand different personalities floating around my brain and it gets confusing some days. Puzzle solving and adventure mixed in as well is good for any group if done right. I truly enjoy those nefarious villains that always just out of reach which can come back to mess with the players time and time again.
What are your favorite aspects about role playing games? My favourite aspect is it engaging others in a social manner and the sharing stories of adventures that most people have a hard time understanding. I think about it as an open book that as group you write. The DM throws a few exciting words and with the help of the players a story takes place. As a DM I’ve learned that the players do most of the writing for this.
I’m still trying to find time to catch up on Criticalroll and I have watched way to much Acquisition Inc. I’ve yet to find a podcast I like.
Apart from having D&D as a main hobby I’ve been involved in Martial arts for years and years either teaching or as a student. I’m the father of a young barbarian and a delightfully mystical wizard. I spend summers hiking in the mountains and spending family time camping. Other than that I’m a pretty simple person. Laid back and I get along with everyone. I can appreciate the different styles the various people have brought to the table. New people have always given me a learning opportunity.

Hey everyone! I'm Zack, a mechanical engineering student graduating in May. I've been playing D&D consistently since the 5e DMG came out and started DM with fairly little experience before hand. As a writer, I just did what felt right, which led to some mishaps here and there and an unfortunately comedic finale, but that first campaign is something I wouldn't change for the world.
Also, I played a rogue and have only occasionally glanced back.

Well met, fellow RPGers. I'm Matt, dad of 3. I've been playing since Christmas 1979 (7th grade for me). Started with AD&D and the red box. Had to crayon fill the numbers on my dice. You younglings don't know how good you got it :). I've played all editions, I still buy other systems, but always come back to D&D. Corrupted my kids with gaming and general geekdom. My late wife was a geek princess.

My current goal is to play every race and every class in 5e before 6e comes out :p

This is probably my favorite thread right now... It's really amazing to see all us gamers from all over the world (and so many from Cali) come together and share our love of gaming. It's freaking beautiful.
My name is Billy and I am from Western Pennsylvania, BillyFromDaBack on Xbox One (Overwatch is my other addiction right now, so add me if you want a mid-level silver working on gold team mate in Comp.) I am 33 on the verge of 34 and I have been gaming since about 2004 when an Army buddy of mine introduced me to Warhammer 40K. I didn't stick with Warhammer, I suck at making models but I did find a love of RP'ing. Over the years I have played AD&D, 3.5, HATED 4th, Pathfinder, Rifts, World of Darkness, Vampire the Masquerade and Requiem, Scion, Everquest (barf, though the gnome priest was beast mode!), tricked into Rollmaster (?#@?>#$@$>#@?>@), Star Wars d20 and the Saga Edition (seriously one of the best systems ever made) and now finally 5th Edition.
Gaming has been a lifesaver for me. I love gaming so much, and I am quite decent at it. But I really love running a game. I like getting my friends together and giving them something other than drinking and drugs to do. Where we live it is kind of hard to get away from stuff like that Currently I am running and freaking LOVING Storm King's Thunder. (I like the Realms, I do...but we really need some Eberron love for 5E already.) The party I am running is currently surrounded by Stone Giants at Deadstone Cleft...this is the first time since the game started that the whole party might end up in a TPK... :/ I also occasionally play in a Pathfinder game as a lawful good goblin paladin. (Sir d'Dirt). I have a serious dislike for when people complain about broken systems or try to break a system. I understand the need to point out the flaws, but games are made to be played not broke.
I have a mental illness that makes it hard for me to not get distracted or communicate certain things. I also get hooked into things really quickly, like if I like something I freaking love it. (These forums, though, am I right?) I won't get into the specifics but if it wasn't for D&D I don't know where my life would be right now. It's made me a better person. It's made me a healthier person. (Minus the increasing size of my recently size 34 tummy...lol)
I believe in this game because in some weird way it truly believes in us; the players. Scrabble could give two craps about how we feel or what we'll do in the game. But D&D, and most RPG's, respects our intelligence enough and uses it to make a world and an experience that we can all thrive in. I've seen insecure friends, who shy from any confrontation stand tall as a warrior facing down a demon and friends who were some of the toughest soldiers I have ever met cower in fear when facing a goblin horde. It brings out the best in us and sometimes our insecurities. We all know what this game means to each and everyone one of us. That's what makes it so special. And living with PTSD and Depression I couldn't live without this game.
I love my dog, Artemis. (Yeah, he's named after THAT Artemis...lol Though, my Artemis is a coward.) He's a black lab/leprechaun or fairy. I don't know which but it's some magical race and he's my best friend in the world. I am in a wonderfully, sometimes confusingly chaotic relationship with a woman who is way too beautiful for me, but hey, I ain't complaining. I like to enjoy a nice glass of a sweet red wine and on some occasions a nice crown apple whiskey. I love Star Wars, Game of Thrones, DCTV, Marvel movies and have found a new love for Pete Holmes. (His new show Crashing on HBO is freaking amazing!) I love long conversations about things I love and believe in the human spirit. And I believe in you. If you ever want to have a chat, I always have an open ear. I know life is hard enough if you don't use it making friends and sharing. But I especially love talking about gaming. Like, scratching my neck and saying, "Got any more of them D&D conversations..."

"...Debts must always be paid, sometimes in more than blood and gold. But this is Ordo Ursa," Ren places his hand on Erakas's chest, right where the Dragonborn's heart is. "Right here. And it always has been and always will be. Don't ever forget that. Because I won't."
