I'm gonna take a stab in the dark here and say, the audience. This is a tough one because it's so short.
The shadow "flew by." What else flies by? Time. Who's "a man who never lived"? A fictional character. I can see a fictional character making time fly by if you're hearing or reading his story, but what's time flying *from*? Boredom? I dunno, but whatever it is, I guess the person who created it is the person experiencing the story.
It doesn't line up all that well, but it's all I've got. It's such a short riddle! I need more clues!
I'm guessing "up from up and down from down" means more than 2 letters but fewer than 4. Could also mean it starts with a letter between D and U. "In the middle goes all the way 'round" sounds like the middle letter is O. I'm sure there are other words which satisfy these requirements but I'm too lazy to figure them all out. Mom works.
It's "toe." T is the letter before U -- up from "up"; E is the letter after D -- down from "down."
Your riddle. 😉
Edit: Sorry, that one took so long to solve it I forgot it was my riddle. 🤣😂🤣

But if you’ve got a different answer in mind say so and we’ll keep on guessing.
Hmm. Okay, a shadow flew by. Birds fly by. Some birds are dark like shadows. Vultures are characterized largely by what they eat. Then the feast would be a corpse, and the man would be... Well, nothing makes sense. Time flies by, more specifically an hour or a day might fly by. Or a night, the time most associated with shadow perhaps! If the night flew by, scared (from its feast) (by a man who never lived)... The man isn't getting me anywhere, so let's look at the feast. What does the night... Eat?
I'm stumped. Am I supposed to be thinking about D&D lore here? I mean, there are shadows...
Haha, it seems so obvious once you see it. But I was not seeing it.
I'm a big fan of rhyming riddles. Here's one:
My world was born, my oceans dried. My cities lingered, no one died. My mountains were as flat as plains, my sandy deserts had no grains. My forests, they were vast and green, but nowhere could a tree be seen. And in this land where nothing grows, the lost explorer finds a rose. What am I?
Is It Poseidon from the Odessey?

Since this person won't confirm any answers to their riddle, I'll add my own:
I strike when you lie
I am death's gentle friend
I trouble you when I am not there
I sooth you when I am
What am I?

So not a vulture. A crow or raven perhaps.

You're too good! That's exactly right.
This feels like it's about letters in words, but that's not getting me anywhere. A meal?
