I've also been trying to play with some very American mythology. Unfortunately, there isn't much that has survived.
I wouldn’t be too sure about that. American folklore is as rich as any other countries. It also has the benefit of being extremely diverse due to the wide range of peoples who have settled its shores. The vast landscape of the country also allows for many different flavors of fear and legends. Even if you stay strictly Southern Gothic, ignoring the Yankees of the North and everybody else, you have the ancient hollers of Appalachia brimming with haints, the swamps and swing of Louisiana, the plains and deserts of Texas where God runs his finger through the dirt in the form of tornados, and everywhere inbetween.
You have no idea how happy it made me to see someone else say they were interested in Southern Gothic.
