hey guys? do you ever think about your kill count in DnD? Like that cultist trying to stab you, or that baby black dragon who's egg you smashed before it could hatch. It made me think about where that was coming from inside of me. That bloodlust, that murderous feeling.
That’s interesting you mention that. The one scene in 5e I really can’t stand is the one in Tyranny of Dragons where it describes in graphic detail how you can smash the black dragon eggs and kill the baby dragons inside. Literally made me feel sick. I have no problem killing a cultist who tried to stab me though.
It feels wrong to kill a baby. And the explanation of “it’s evil” just doesn’t feel okay. Most dnd players, I hope, would be disgusted if their campaign had you slaughter a drow baby and sell it’s organs. But dragons are just as intelligent. Wotc has been putting effort into making it so that the traditionally “evil” peoples are more fleshed out (orcs etc.) but it’s somehow still fine to murder baby dragons.
I’m assuming for this that the wyrmlings have advanced enough through their incubation so that they’re actually dragons and not just squishy dragon cell clumps.
I think you're attaching a bit much of yourself to your character, just because Jack the pirate killed a baby dragon doesn't necessarily make it a moral choice for you in the real world. Though in general characters are somewhat expected to be morally well meaning The reason orcs and goblins were considered for changes is because they have a history in racism. (obviously its unrealistic to have an entire race in a fantasy setting be evil, but if there's lore reasons it doesn't make it racist) Personally I don't mind using classic orcs and goblins. Goblin raiding party? Probably evil. But I think a lot of goblins in fantasy are probably not that bad, they're just not the ones bothering adventurers.
(Note: I have not read this passage in the Tyranny of Dragons, so I'm not saying it was a good idea to add to the book, I'm just responding more broadly to this conversation)
I mean yeah it's a story, it would be surprising if you didn't get at least a little bit attached to it. And the game's about immersion overall
