Counterargument: many of the original weapons (such as spears, bows, and atlatls) were for hunting animals, not people. Many animals are dangerous if you don't have adequate protection from them, and back then they didn't have enough shelter, and thus had to defend themselves in other ways.

Imo, some of those are a necessary evil. If you want to protect your family and people from invaders, you need to be able to do it well, and that's just with muskets and matchlocks. Even most modern weapons were created in the world wars, and I feel like that's a good reason to have some good weapons. Excluding the atomic bomb. That should never exist

So, a creepy character... Well, first you need a theme. Horror on its own tends to fall flat. You need to pick a subgenre. And remember that creepiness is focused on ambiguity, the aspect of being unpredictable not due to randomness but due to lack of information or twisted expectations. There is a reason clowns and masks are considered scary.

With less advanced weapons, or with their bare hands if necessary. And don't say they wouldn't. There are historical accounts of knights dropping their weapons (most likely due to damage) to duke it out fist to fist

There are as many secrets as there are pieces of information. But one thing is important to note: evil requires power. So does good, but evil requires more. To commit vile acts requires that you inflict harm upon another (not getting into taboos here, those are a different story and much more complex), and almost all life resists this, sometimes to its own death.
