Rule Number 1 DMing: Whatever you thought was going to happen isn't what's going to happen.
Was DMing for some friends. They entered the main tent of a [cult] camp. In there I decided I'd let the party know the elder had healing magic by having a guy with a limp walk in and no longer have a limp after the elder was like "Be healed!" Figured they'd react to that like, "Oh he has healing magic? That's good to know."
It. Did. Not. Go. As. Planned.
What actually happened is that they doubted the authenticity of the healing magic and were skeptical that it could be a scam. That the guy with a limp could've just been an act. So they followed the guy that got his limp healed and, after some crazy shenanigans, broke the guy's legs and gave him third degree burns to see if the elder could heal those. (Which he could.)

I bet the elder was as frustrated as you are.

Also, given some of the events I'm gonna be making a magic item or looking for a good one to use as inspiration. Basically needs to be a protective garment the [cult] was talking about and making.
Initial idea is something like: +1 AC, when taking damage targets rolls 1d12+2 and if that value is higher than the damage taken, halve the damage. Would be giving that item to a priest, acolyte, and a couple cultists. But not sure how much that would affect the challenge rating for a party of 4 lv3s. (Though could, depending on things, also be reduced to a party of 3 lv3s if this one guy that tried stealing in the middle of the camp doesn't do all too hot with things.)

Oh he was very understanding. The warlock that blasted the guy decided he'd pretend like he had a sorcerer Wild Magic Surge. (Rolled nicely on deception and, for an already ridiculous scenario, it was an amusing idea.) The Rogue? His deception was a 4. So the surrounding villagers were like "OMG. What did you do to cause this poor man's wild magic surge?" And his successive rolls for deception were also low. (Plus a cumulative 6 on religion to try persuading them that just left 'em insulted.) So he was looking at being put in the slammer until the warlock stuck up for him with some nice rolls for persuasion/deception. (He was proficient in deception but not persuasion so I gave him half proficiency on those rolls.)

I'm not the best with CRs and such, but I think it's a pretty cool idea.
