Yeah it’s just that I feel like people think of me differently when they know I’m a boy, so could people who already know just not talk about it or really tell people? It’s not a big deal to me.

It's a slang term associated with things like surfers, skaters, and other subcultures. Typically not heavily used. So it probably sounds off. Kind of like being called "Bro." Yeah it can be technically correct and sound right in the correct context, but can also stick out like a sore thumb. You can't imagine Jefferson writing, "...the proposition that all dudes/bros are created equal..."
