I am simply saying that in the Bible, all divine power and miracles, which were thought of during that time as "magic", come from God. I testify that Priesthood power does exist on the earth today, and it comes from the Lord.
Haha, that priesthood power bit is very controversial actually. I do think miracles can still happen, minus the priesthood bit. I wouldn't ever call the miracles that God performs in the Bible magic and I think there was a clear distinction in the minds of the people back then as well. Magic is the forbidden practice of mystic crafts in direct offense to God, while God is the maker and controller of the universe, he is not bound by the same laws as we are. Magic is breaking a law, while God is not bound by the law so he cannot break it. A person with a driver's license doesn't have to have a licensed driver in the car with them unlike a kid with a learner's permit. If a kid with a learner's permit drives on their own they are breaking a law, but if someone with a license drives on their own they aren't breaking any laws. I probably over explained myself there.
However, not to offend anyone religious, but the Harry Potter Universe has no God, and magic has always been a thing of man there.
That is true. God is not a factor in the equation, and it is okay for an author to do that for the sake of their story.
I agree that I wouldn't call God's power "magic". I'm noting the fact that many mythologies have existed that do believe in magic at that time.
If you don't mind me asking, what religion do you associate with, if any? I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. And feel free to ask question because people think a lot of strange things about what we believe lol.

That doesn't really make sense. I'm talking about the real history of the Bible, not mythology. I don't see what you mean by bringing mythology into this.

I don't mind at all. I'm a Christian, mostly Calvinist and Baptist. Pretty reformed. What are you?

Oh okay, I have several Latter-Day Saints friends. That is very different from what I believe.

I said mythology because you said "the people back then" knew the distinction, I'm just saying that not everyone was aware at all times of Christian-related beliefs. But the people mentioned in the Bible did know the distinction, yes.

Are we still talking about magic? I'm not sure where the discussion is at right now. I've just brought up magic and mythology a lot because the original discussion was if Harry Potter as sinning by using magic.

Yeah, we are pretty different, especially with having the Book of Mormon.
I’m doing pretty good. I have a ton of work and activities so I’m super busy and tired, but most of the work is fun. I get to research Proboscis Monkeys and Puritans, and I have a six hour long Bible study tomorrow.
Doing good. Did not expect a whole religious debate but that was an interesting discussion. How are you doing?
Yep. Every now and then LCW will veer into different topics. But in general it's always been civil which is nice.
It's interesting how this thread turnes out. It started focussing on getting the last comment, but veered towards a 90,000 post chat thread.
From the experience I saw in LCW threads on other forums that does generally tend to be the case. A constant "I win" isn't sustainable. But freeform talk is.
Though in one of the iterations, the mods would chop it into a new thread every now and then. (Made the forum work easier when threads weren't too long from what I recall.) So we ended up having winners now and then.

Are we still talking about "magic" or have we moved to something else?

Things have gotten a little muddled and I have said most of what I have to say. I wouldn't mind moving on.

Learned earlier today that my Saturday, unlike I initially thought, is going to be busy.
So that's nice. Will have something to and make a little money at the same time.
