I’m revisiting an old idea I had for a tavern/ survival game that I had but since there’s so many new threads on Adohand’s already I should probably just wait for now until it all dies down.
No, I'd join! There's always room for another thread!

Well yeah, but it might just get buried under the wave of new threads. There’s like ten chat threads on Adohand’s alone.
anyways, the thread idea was a survival thread reminiscent of the multiplayer game Don’t Starve Together. All the players can build their own characters using a special system and can buy supernatural abilities, and the mods, the people running the game, are trying their very hardest to kill all of the players. Of course, there are rules for how the mods can go about this. Also, the mods have their mod characters (the in game people making All the bad stuff happen, they’re called nightmare monarchs) but they are stuck in their own little domains and can only do stuff like create new monsters, threats, biomes, and materials. There’s Hunger, health, sanity, and a few other stats.
i’ve thought this out a bit, and I had a giant group brainstorming ideas for it.
In the game, you must worry about many things, such as spoiled food, oppressive heat, extreme cold, lack of food, forest fires that will destroy everything you care about (unless you play as willow. Willow starts those forest fires) birds with one eye and long legs that will turn you into a past tense as soon as they notice you’re near them, Giant buffalo creatures that are hard to tame and are faster than you, spiders that progressively get worse and bigger over time, and packs of rabid dogs out for your blood exclusively. Oh yeah, also the dark. You die in the dark, it’s a game mechanic.
How many of these mechanics are explained to the player upfront? Or is it: It's getting dark but I've got a spear so I can fight off wolves... and my character is dead.
How many of these mechanics are explained to the player upfront? Or is it: It's getting dark but I've got a spear so I can fight off wolves... and my character is dead.
Nothing. Nothing is explained. Nothing.
oh and when it gets dark in this game, it gets dark. Pitch black screen, can only see the text box of your character saying something such as, “hello? Anyone there?” And, “I’m not alone…”
I believe the only thing it tells you is, “Say pal, you don't look so good. You better find something to eat before night comes!”
at least in the single player game. (Wooh stuck in bold for some reason!)
there are two editions, don’t starve, and don’t starve together (also called to get her, it makes slightly more sense in the plot)
very importantly, the two games, despite them mostly just being single and multiplayer versions of each other with a few noticeable differences, have different storylines as they take place at different points on the timeline. Don’t starve, the first one, is a single player survival game in which you play as a character that has made a deal with the god king of this realm, a former British magician named Maxwell, who stumbled upon a tome of magical spells called the Codex Umbra, which he started using in his shows, becoming popular. On his last show, he and his assistant accidentally messed up a spell and let a shadow creature from a nightmare world onto their world, causing the 1906 earthquake. Maxwell and his assistant, Charlie, were sucked into this world, currently a void, with nothing but dust, and them. “Them,” meaning the shadow creatures that control this world. The creatures turned Charlie into a monster and made Maxwell a king, trapping him on a throne and giving him godlike powers of creation. He builds a world, and becomes bored. So he kidnaps several people from earth by making deals with them and sucking them into the world, called the constant. You play as these people, trying to survive in a nightmarish hellscape designed to kill you. Also, Charlie is the creature that kills you in the dark. Eventually, you can find a portal called Maxwell’s door, allowing you to go through a series of challenges in order to try and make your way out of the realm. 5 challenges, the last one being called lights out. Try and survive in a world with no sunlight. If you do by always keeping a light with you, you can find Maxwell chained to a throne and powerless. (He was previously shown to be almost all powerful, as he can send out avatars of himself to interact with the world he made) Using a key, you can unchain Maxwell, where he then turns to dust from old age, the throne having kept him alive. You are then taken by the shadow creatures and placed on the throne, becoming the new nightmare king. That’s where the first game ends with its optional ending.
Huh. Definitely not what I'd expect, even with knowledge of the giant spiders, deadly dark, and mutant pig men.
I sometimes wonder how people even come up with these ideas.
Though since you get on the throne, is there a mode where you get to play as the king killing NPC survivors. (Who are likely buffed to make it hard to kill them.)
just gonna summarize some of the playable characters in don’t starve together for ya. (Btw Maxwell comes back because magic I guess and is now a playable character, trapped in a realm of his own creation)
oh and the game takes place in the 1920s.
Wilson (the inventor) is an inventor who thinks he’s a lot smarter than he is. He does somehow have the miraculous ability to transmute materials into others, most characters have some unexplained magic ability. He lived in the woods trying to create some unknown machine, Maxwell made a deal with him to give him infinite knowledge, and led him to build Maxwell’s portal. Wilson is the default character.
Willow (the fire starter) is a pyromaniacal orphan who has a confirmed kill count of hundreds. She burnt down an orphanage when one of the workers took her favorite toy. She starts with a lighter and a teddy bear. She’s immune to fire and gains sanity when burning things. The teddy bear, when she goes insane, becomes giant and animates to protect her from nightmare creatures.
Wendy (the bereaved) is a girl who just really wants to be with her sister. Her dead sister. She is the niece of Maxwell but never met him, and has a flower that allows her to summon the ghost of her sister to defend her. (The sisters name is Abigail) Maxwell made a deal with Wendy for her to get her dead sister back.
Webber (the Undigestible) is a boy who was attacked by a spider who made its way to the real world, who his dad was experimenting on, having gotten it from a scientist friend studying the constant from the outside. Webber was swallowed by the spider but not really, they fused together into one being due to the experiments his dad conducted. He is friendly to spiders and can lead them into battle, and start spider nests.
Maxwell (The Puppemaster) well, we went over him. Using his magic book, he can summon shadow servants to help him collect materials and fight, has a very high sanity score, and is as fragile as a wet Graham cracker. He can also create temporary shadow prisons to trap enemies. He casts spells using a material called nightmare fuel which you get from killing nightmare creatures when you go insane. He can make a connected hat and magician’s closet which he can use as a portable chest because magic.
and there are much, much more.

how about a forum game? There aren’t a lot of interesting ones right now.

The Bloody Barnacle | The Gut | The Athene Crusader | The Jewel of Atlantis
It might work as a forum game. It might require a bit of adjusting, but it could work pretty well. And I’d be okay with that.
PBPs are also an option, but you’re limited to a set number of people. Tricky.

Also accurate. Don’t Starve Together takes, “hostile environment,” to its most literal extreme.
I've never played the game. So I'll take your word for it.
