Status Update: Got pepper sprayed in the face. On run from an angry mob.
Planning to wait until night and ring people's doorbells at 2am to ask them the questions. Expecting that to go better. (Since it'll be one-on-one instead of putting them on the spot in a public place you know.)
Don't get why a mob is after you, if someone came up to me and said 'do you like murder?' I personally wouldn't be aggressive like that.

Forest Gnome Arcane Trickster with the Urchin background. Forest Gnome gives you INT and DEX to synergize the the class. It also gives free Minor Illusion, based on INT. (Again, synergizing with the Arcane Trickster plan.) Urchin background gives you proficiency in Stealth and Sleight of Hand. (Sleight of Hand being used with the Arcane Trickster mage hand.) Being small means you can use your action to cast Minor Illusion for cover and then bonus action hide behind it.
Seems like an exciting possibility for shenanigans.
