Well the first part of the recipe is to make some part of them something that can not be understood or that is very simply strange! For example, the king in yellow is a sort of infectious disease spread through signs and books, that haunts those who discover it. Why? Who knows.
for my eldritch horror, the king of Sea’s bounty, it collects trash. I actually made it along with a bunch of other twisted versions of gods from myths for books that take place on present day earth. What the King does, is that it collects trash, adding it to its collection, finding every lost and discarded thing and keeping it for some unknown reason. It’s amassed an enormous hoard, which in the lore for the book idea, is the great pacific garbage patch.
