The tavern's called Buttons' Best, I'd you ever wanna intro there.
To my understanding taverns are pure RP. And I like having quests/mechanics behind things.
When making characters for example I generally start from "here's a mechanical interaction I want to have..."
With my current characters,
Belolonandalogalo Malololomologalo Tumagalokumagalo: Aarakocra can FLY! (Was also first time making a character of my own when a friend was getting a D&D group together.) Though was also just looking at the various things.
Screechirk Hireek: Wanted to try out the Light Domain. Gave him the Entertainer background to get Acrobatics proficiency to resist grapples. That then built his personality as a cleric invested in stories.
Draíocht: Wood Elf gets Elven Weapon training. Allows him to be a druid and use a longbow. Plus Mask of the Wild is something to try out. And I wanted to try a Moon Druid. Personality then came later.
Eggo Lass: Core idea came from wanting the Legolas -> Eggo Lass pun of an elf that likes cooking. But the first two times I thought of bringing that to life fell flat. But once the Darkness + Devil's Sight vision came to mind things got cooking. I wanted to try out the GOOlock subclass. Looking through backgrounds she gained the Plaintiff background to have legalese knowledge. And Drow magic comes in nicely with the extra cantrip and some more spells.
Drako Blitz: He initially began his existence as a Devotion Paladin. Eventually found I didn't have as much fondness for the way I'd built him. Then saw the Tempest Domain and got excited by those mechanics. Had initially chosen Bronze heritage for two reasons. 1: Looking for something the breath weapon would be good with. 2: I'MA FIRIN' MAH LAZAH! But bronze dragonborn ended up pairing nicely with Tempest Domain.
Eima Blainken: Forest gnome gets free Minor Illusion which is INT-based. Arcane Trickster uses INT for spells. Plus gnomes being short means can hide behind her own illusion. And the urchin background pairs nicely with the Rogue skillset. Then while making her Heroforge got her personality started.
Cherry Littleoak: Wanted to try a Feylock. Wanted to have the Haunted One background. And haflings are cool for the lucky trait.
Fiselius vondus Yaralogus: He's had a couple iterations where his personality derives from his initial build as a bard. But made him a wizard to pair the +2 INT with INT spellcasting. And rock gnome being able to have those clockwork toys. Chose School of Conjuration since it's got some neat feature to try.
Briar Oakthorn: The War Domain +10 to an attack roll means an inflict wounds or guiding bolt is far less likely to go to waste. On a 2 that makes a minimum of 17 to-hit. Needed to solve the issue of nat-1's leading to wasted spell slots. So halfling luck came to save the day and he was born. From there an athletics proficiency pairs nicely with a higher strength so a Soldier background was added, which also pairs nicely with War Domain theming.
I enjoy the characters' personality. But I also really enjoy finding mechanics I want to try.

Taverns, in fact, are not just purely roleplay. They often include mechanics and fighting, depending on the tavern. And also often minor storylines that are cool and interesting to follow, so I think you should try out taverns at least a little bit :)
What's your most unbalanced homebrew thing you've ever made? Mine is probably this one spell I made that's pretty much the magical equivalent of an incendiary nuke.

Never made a homebrew before. I’m shit at it
Me too. I just use the stuff in the books.
I do however make a lot of homebrew lore to flesh out the skeleton of the lore provided in the published adventures and sourcebooks.
