I'm making a little one-shot for the group to run this Saturday. Basic idea is they'll stop some Aztec-inspired cultists. (Predominantly goblinoid.) They'll get word of the cultists, go to a tavern where the cultists have a hideout underneath, have a couple battles, and then *maybe* free some would-be sacrificial victims. (Want to pit the Aztec cultists against some other cultists so the party might not end up being too merciful considering we were in the middle of going to rescue one of the character's girlfriend from being sacrificed by the non-Aztec cultists, but the DM won't be able to do this coming Saturday.)
Considering the party is low on resources/health and I want it to be a relatively quick mission, won't have much combat-oriented stuff. So curious if there's any puzzles/traps you'd recommend. Party is lv5. Tabaxi Champion Fighter, Aasimar Undying Warlock, and Aarakocra Hunter Ranger. (My character Belolonandalogalo Malololomologalo Tumagalokumagalo, though I'll let one of the other players puppet him for the session.)
Encounters within so far I'm thinking of
Half-Ogre standing guard. They could maybe try outsmarting him to let them through an area. If they fight, he could call upon a couple goblins.
Cult Fanatic and 3 cultists as a mini-fight during it. They could possibly be guarding a prison cell containing an acolyte and some commoners of the other cultists.
Final boss fight of a hobgoblin captain, priest, 2 hobgoblins, and 2 goblins in the middle of a sacrificial ritual. And idk, maybe some low-level demon like a quasit if the sacrifices aren't stopped. (Note to self: have it come in animal form to mess with the warlock's belief that animals are in a plot to take over the world.)
But then also want 2-3 puzzle-like encounters perhaps.
Culty puzzle (feel free to not use this, I made it in like minutes cause I felt like puzzle making so there's probably flaws):
The room contains a large unlit bonfire in the center and some amount of candles made in various colors. A warning shows that lighting the wrong candle brings a grave punishment. Murals that can be found in a quick investigation of the room show cultists dancing around the lit bonfire. There is one torch, but it goes out whenever in close radius to the bonfire and reignites when it goes away from it.
The bonfire can be lit by the party dancing around it, which causes it to light up in a specific color. Lighting the candle of that color solves the puzzle. Otherwise, the party gets punished in some way. After this, the torches goes out.
(Yes, this is inspired by that one ritual in Cult of the Lamb lol)
On another note, trying to draw a concept design for a thingy and my horrible artistic skills are certainly not helping. So that's fun.

I kinda like it. Perhaps use it as the way to open the door to the main ritual chamber? And for punishment, lighting different candles could have various malluses.

Purple: IDK, make this the correct answer Red: DC 15 CHA save or charmed by all goblinoids for 1 hour (idk, think of something, maybe make it like sanctuary against goblins)
