Well, they started out getting the quest from the wizard. We had some tech issues which got flavored that it just took a REALLY long time to get down the stairs.
Then they came across two vine blights. Now I'd seen 1 vine blight was trivial. And with 5 or 6 partymembers 2 at least got to somewhat of a fight. Maybe ten minutes into the combat,
EVERYTHING WAS ON FIRE!!!
The blights used their ability to have roots come up and grasp people, which caught a lot of the partymembers in the AoE. So the cleric was like, "Hey, could I use sacred flame to set the roots on fire?" And while I explained sacred flame was radiant instead of actual fire, I did say I was open to him using a torch to light it. As he's an aarakocra he was able to drop it in the center between the two blights.
Then the minotaur rogue is like, "I have a bottle of oil, can I use it to make the fire bigger?" Spoiler: He could and he did.
Remember. Most of the partymembers are still trapped in the roots and now the fire is growing quicker.
The vine blights hit hard when they hit and the dice were murderous. Keep rolling damages that were like, "You go from full health to 0hp. Time to teach you about death saving throws."
Then a player who hadn't been sure if he'd been able to make it before had messaged me earlier in the day that he might be able to. He gets online as all this is happening and I want to add him into initiative so he can be part of the battle. His goblin barbarian comes in from the North (the vine blights are in the middle and the party is in the South) and, fitting with his backstory, sees this aarakocra flying above the battlefield and throws a javelin into the flying cleric's arm. 8 damage, he's down from full health and the fall damage causes a failed death save. (don't worry; I did make sure pvp was consensual)
Between all the chaos, constantly expanding fire, helping them learn the ropes, multiple people going down and getting back up, and how terrible the rolls were it took about 2.5 hours to go through the combat. xD
And while I'd added the second vine blight to make it a little more challenging I have to admit I didn't expect it to be that challenging. :D
After all this they get to the bakery. (Premise of the one-shot is that a wizard wants them to get this famous apple pie recipe from a bakery that's now infested with goblins). In usual DnD style they burst through the front door. Then they send the Minotaur Rogue's pet mouse into the bakery and after a few minutes he comes back so the Nature Cleric casts speak with animals to find out what the mouse saw. They go into the bakery proper, goblins drop down. The barbarian stars flexing, the cleric is adding persuasion, and he convinces the goblins that he should be their new leader. So they get a lot of info about the lay of the land.
After this the barbarian and aarakocra cleric go to the room with the goblins' current leader and start talking. Some mid persuasion rolls followed by the barbarian pulling out a goliath's femur bone and reaching to touch the boss' shoulder. The two rogues go to a cold storage room and the human rogue finds out one of the apple pies is trying to hide by staying still. When he reaches for it it sprouts wings and begins to fly. The dragonborn druid is walking around outside the bakery, finds some goblins that are running away. Convinces them that she might be able to help them get the apple pie recipe. One of the goblins is a weebo for dragonborns. And she walks near a refuse pile.
The goblin boss and companions take the femur bone as a sign of aggression. The flying apple pie realizes the rogue has hunger in his eyes. A violet fungus sprouts from the refuse pile.
The Great Battle of the Bakery Began
In the apple pie room the flying pie begins to revoke the rogue's gravity rights but he succeeds on a constitution saving throw and remains on the ground. After which he stabs out and kills the flying apple pie. It smells divinely delicious. The dragonborn get merced by the violet fungus. It rolls a nat-20 with almost max damage, 15 damage against the 8hp druid. But thankfully the weebo goblin takes out the fungus afterwards to stop its onslaught. In the boss' room there's an initial early strike against the barbarian that deals a chunk of damage, but then he lands a solid hit on the boss and intimidates him into standing down.
It. Was. Epic.
They find the recipe. The aarakocra cleric gets merced by a poison needle trap, but he's fine in the end. They bring it back to the wizard and get rewarded.
All in all, I quite liked it and it seems they had fun too.
Very little went how I expected. But I wouldn't have it any other way.
