After the abrupt awakening from the innkeeper, you dress and head down stairs. As you hit the bottom step you have to step around a rock the size of a small pony sitting in the common room, an adjacent hole in the north wall of the inn being, its apparent entry way. The main doors to the inn are open and you catch the glimpse of people with torches running past. You step out into the cool evening air and are almost overcome by the heavy hanging smoke. Coughing as you glance around, you find several small homes are a blaze. “Ya best keep yer wits about ya.” you hear. Spinning around you see the inn keeper, a middle aged man in a night shirt, wielding shield and long sword. At his side are his 2 large mastiffs, Bruno and Brawn. “We’re tryin’ ta get tha woman and children ta safety fer now.” He tells you. “You best head ta tha square, I’m sure Darathar will have use of ya.” He points towards the center of town then heads off to the east. You debate whether to head to the center or head out of town when a young woman with 5 children runs to you and begs you all to help her get her children to the center of town. This is when you notice you are not standing alone. The other guests of the Inn, ((PC’s)) are standing next to you.
This would be a good place for everyone to introduce their characters to the party

This post has potentially manipulated dice roll results.
Essendrum smiles reassuringly at the woman.
“Of course. When we go, children, let’s stay close to the walls. For now, please say hello to this fine group of travelers while I attend to a minor matter. You might ask that knight in shining armor why his armor has no rust on it.”
Essendrum gestures to the others, catching their attention with a smile and a raised eyebrow in the direction of the children, and then steps over to the boulder. He raises his staff in an arc above him and speaks an arcane phrase. (Casts Mage Armor and invokes his abjuration Ward) For a moment, a tracery of glowing runes appear about him. They fade, but still flicker about him subtly, appearing and disappearing as he moves. Warded, he examines the boulder to see what clues it holds. He bends to examine the wreckage it has caused and tosses a bit of dirt in the air to judge the wind, all quite calmly as though danger were a distant rumor.
Without looking back, Essendrum cheerfully remarks, “At a minimum I think we may be able to judge the size of the giant we’re dealing with from the force and size of this gift left for us, and my friends, when it comes to giants, that is rather an important matter.”
Enoch quickly made his way down the stairs of the inn, and looked at his surroundings in disbelief. He had donned his armor and grabbed his gear before coming down; with giants causing trouble, it only made sense. It was then he noticed the innkeeper, prepared for war, apparently.
“We’re tryin’ ta get tha woman and children ta safety fer now.You best head ta tha square, I’m sure Darathar will have use of ya.”
The young paladin nodded, then began looking around for anyone to assist. It's then that the woman and children ran up, and Essendrum directed them towards the group before stepping towards the boulder. A bit confused, Enoch turned from the wizard (it had to be a wizard, dressed like that, right?) and began talking to the woman.
"Come this way, ma'am. We'll keep you safe." Turning to the children as he led the way to the town square, he smiled. "Hi! My name's Enoch. Don't be scared; everything will be all right!"
Kiza is a Kenku with travel worn clothing and studded leather. With a rapier at her hip and avian goggles. Once she sees the boulder she wonders are they under siege of some kind and why Triboar. For a moment she considered leaving Triboar to escape to safety, but seeing the mother with her children pulls at her heart strings as she remembers her lovable family. "Alright I can try to escort you, but you must stay back by 10 ft in case we run into something dangerous." Kiza then turns to Essendrum's proclamation "A giant here, oh no." Kiza then lets out a soft whistle and a bat lands on Kiza's outstretched arm. "This is Venti my familiar and he can help me scout ahead when we leave" She looks over the gathered group and notices several who seem to know how to handle themselves in combat.
Essendrum pulls out a book and jots down a quick note, using the boulder as a writing desk and gesturing the others over. The script is Draconic but the language is Terran and it’s incomprehensible even to Bjorn.
Essendrum sees Enoch eager to be off and concludes his investigation.
”Right then! Action! Sir Adamantine, note the well worn path which I assume leads to the square! Master Dwarf, I suggest you stand by the Adamantine Knight for all our safety. Kiza, well met! I will follow ten steps back with the children, in case we run into something dangerous. Might I suggest “the Fellowship of the Boulder” as a name for our group?” He winks at the children.
A raven alights from the eaves of the inn and flutters after Venti. “Adamantine!” It squawks.
”Master inn keeper, my tab will have to wait. If you have any livestock tethered close to your inn, I suggest you release them. They could attract unwanted attention.”
(OOC: I didn’t alter my investigation roll, although I thought it started as a 22. But I edited the flavor text and I guess that could be altering since you could change an action after you find out the roll or something. I’m new to this.😀)
Coming down the stairs a bit behind the others is a battle-scarred dwarf in rather odd-looking armor. It seems to be made of an aquatic creature's thick hide, but its most unusual feature is the array of sharpened spikes projecting out from every surface. Wearing a matching spiked shield and sporting no visible weapons, the grizzled veteran looks with concern at the boulder, then his eyes grow wider at the implications.
When he hears of the endangered family, he says, "Coward of a giant! Throwing rocks and picking on innocent women and children. Do not fear, young ones--if this miserable creature dares show its ugly mug on our way to the town square, I'll drive my longest spike right into its eye!" The dwarf seems to become a bit unhinged at the threat posed by the giants against the defenseless townsfolk, and one can easily tell he has instantly gone into a state of battle readiness just this side of pure rage.
Spike appears ready to bolt out the door and confront this giant head-on, but he seems to be holding back as he hears the others discussing the best way to ensure the safety of the children...He has made his way to the door and has his hand on the knob, though, saying to the assembled children, woman, and fighting folk, "Ready?"
"Lets go everyone, do not panic and stay with us" says Kiza. Once they are on their way she will release Venti into the air "Go scout ahead and tell me if there is danger ahead" she then unsheathes her rapier looking warily for giants.
Essendrum does his best to keep the children together and under cover as they move along.
”My name is Eesendrum, incidentally,” he says to nobody in particular as an afterthought.
Essendrum’s raven cocks its head watching the bat fly off and remarks, “danger ahead,” also to nobody in particular. It flutters above the children looking for trouble.
(OOC:Essendrum rolled a 15 for perception in the game log. His passive perception is 16. His raven has +3 but I couldn’t figure out how to roll for the raven!)
Unsure of the situation, Bjorn gathers his basic gear & backpack, deciding to leave his saddle bag with his extra gear in his room. He heads to the main room and overhears the conversation. He states, "I'm not much of a physical fighter, but perhaps my other abilities may be of use on the front lines."
”Front lines? If you’ve read Eruditius’ Small Unit Tactics: A Comparison of Dwarven and Goblin Battlefield Cohesion, then you know that is no place to be at all! No, sir, we are taking these children to the authorities in the town square. I assure you, we will not be going to any lines, front or otherwise.”
He leans forward conspiratorily, “Join me with the children. If a front line should happen to develop, we have a knight and a spiky Dwarf to man it. I’m Essendrum, since you missed the introductions. That’s Kiza and the knight and the Dwarf haven’t asked for names yet, so I suggest you call them Sir Adamantine and Spike. If you name them you’ll just get attached and I expect we’ll be saying happy goodbyes shortly. The eggs at breakfast were delicious, by the way.”
The cleric raises an eyebrow at the human. "A fellow scholar I take it? I am Bjorn Stahle, a Seeker of Oghma, the Lord of Knowledge." He sighs and continues on, "You are correct though, we should get these children to safety FIRST, instead of seeking glory for glory's sake."
The woman nods "Thank you so much." she says graciously to the group. Quickly you and your charges make your way along the road leading west, towards the town center. You pass 2 farm houses along the way, both in flames, thick smoke bellowing from their roof tops. Everyone: As you make your way along the road you catch an odd site. Ahead, small balls of fire seem to leap from the furthest farm house and go bouncing down the road ahead of you. Essendrum:
The situation has you glancing around, looking for threats when something catches your eye. You see the bouncing balls of fire. You also see figures moving swiftly down the road in and out of the fire light. They seem to be moving too swiftly for you to make out what they are but they are taller than you. It is what is ahead of those figures that makes your eyes widen. Briefly, you can make out the outline of what appears to be two huge figures far ahead. They disappear as fast as they have appeared but you make out they massive.
Kiza:
You glance around, a bit nervous. This might be due to the situation or just an occupational habit. As you move along the roadway you catch movement ahead, not only do you see the bouncing balls of fire you also make out several forms moving fast around them in and out of the darkness.
The party makes its way to a small crossroad just before the travelers camp grounds and the town "Tower" when one of the young children screams, turns and abruptly runs back the way you came. Suddenly the party is faces with the bouncing balls of light, (4 in fact) they are so close you can make them out, These are Magmin. Along with them, darting in and out of the darkness are 5 larger figures Orc riding on Axe Beak. This group turns to the party, evil smiles cross their face as they advance.
